Hi All,
I just wanted to report that my overheating problem has been fixed. While I'm changing the water pump, I have done a boat load of preventive maintenances with it. I would like to thank all who have helped me with diagnosis here! I have some quick questions. I tested the thermostat operation for both of the new one and old one. Both seemed to be start to open at around 180F not 170F as they were specified. Also at that temperature it is opening only about a tenth of inch. Are these typical of Subaru thermostat? After the repair, my engine temp gauge seems to be solidly staying just below horizontal position. I also paid particular attention in cleaning and flushing radiator and coolant path so that my engine cooling system would run more efficiently. (I haven’t changed the radiator, since it is rather expensive and water seemed to be coming out well when it was flushed) But when I go near the engine or pop the hood after a couple of hours of driving, I just feel that this car is running considerably hotter than other cars I drove. I just wonder whether SVX is supposed to operate at higher temperature than most other cars or using lower temperature thermostat would help running cooler? |

The fact that you physically sense that the car is running hot does not surprise me. When I first got my SVX I had the same misgivings. By way of comparison, they are a hot beast and retain their temperature as you have noted. (i.e. are not )
