transmission front diff dissaster

i have recently found out that my front diff is screamin for help. I had a transmission tech tell me it would be easier to just find a used tranny on ebay and use that but i want to know how hard it would be to rebuild my front diff. I want to take all new gears and bearings and replace them. How hard and how long would it take me to do this? I am vrey concerned because it is getting worse by the day. So if anyone has doen this it would be great if you could get back to me on this as soon as possible thanx for your input.

Besides "screaming for help" what are the other symptoms, what does it do?

Harvey.

OK, yes the gear box comes out, front and rear ends come off to remove the pinion shaft. You can fit the new parts, bearings, seals. Sounds like the gears may be damaged by now, So they may be replaced also. That done the gears have to be set up. Not an easy job, can be done, but it would be best to get a tech to do that part of the job. While there check the speedo drive gear, you would like it to go out after you get it all done.

It may be a good time to think about changing the diff ratio, to a lower 4:1 or so. Have to swap the gears in the rear diff also.

All the best.
Harvey.

OK Tom, Your car is a FWD and you want to fit a 2001Legacy AWD gear box, using FWD only?.

I think you would be better to fit the Legacy diff unit to the SVX box. To use the whole box would meen that the Legacy TCU would have to be fitted, with some wiring problems . There would be other problems with the AWD box not driving the back wheels. The front wheel spin could not be controlled, and that can lead to breaking the front diff again.

The I think the diff section could be swaped as a unit, with out having to set up the gears.

Harvey.

yea thats all i needed to know, i just want the differencial part of the transmission. Now i was told that the diff part was able to be removed along with the pinion shaft. i was going to swap the differential unit and the pinion shaft from the legacy tranny into the svx tranny, i jus wanted to know if it would work
