Shell Gasoline

Hi there premium freaks, Shell has been running ads/tv spots hyping there new gasoline blends. It says it works from the first tankfull. Not being the gullible type I just let the hype roll on. But my wife and I had taken my mother in law to the doctors on Thursday and on the way home I needed gas and there is a Shell ststion nearby so I stopped and filled up. From the station to the freeway is about a mile on surface streets at 45/50 mph. The first thing I noticed when I got on the gas on the on ramp was a feeling of smoothness with more power. I told my wife Shell might have something here. She says"Your kidding". I say not really. I'm still on that first tank of Shell premium but so far i'm impressed. Later in the trip home we were cruising along at 90mph. Smooth, quiet, with just a nice murmur from the Stebrow exhaust. Life is good. Take care, BOBB

Trying to figure out what they put in but so far all I can come up with is a "new blend of detergents and friction reducers"

""Prior to developing the new fuel, Shell conducted extensive consumer research, which revealed that drivers value the time and money saved as a result of improved fuel economy. The new formulation reduces friction between moving parts inside an engine, such as pistons and rings, so they slide more easily inside cylinders. This helps the engine run more efficiently and use less fuel. In addition, the new Shell formulation has significantly more detergent than gasolines at minimum EPA detergency requirements to help protect against the build-up of harmful carbon deposits inside the engine. A clean engine not only performs better, but also produces fewer emissions.""

What is the octane rating of Shell premium? All I ever run is Sunoco 94 mostly from the same two gas stations and have never had a problem.

Octane

Hi everyone, I'll take a look, but I think it was '93 octane. The SVX calls for '91 octane. I buy brand name Premium gasoline by price. In my area the octane is '91/'92or'93 at posted prices. Yes , Sunoco has '94 octane but they charge 10 to 15 cents more for it and I don't consider it cost effective. I did fill up for the trip to Reading Four with Sunoco '94 octane but I did not notice any improvement. This Shell on the other hand was quite evident. So its a fairly easy and cheap way to check. Next time you need a fill up, make it Shell. I'm retired and never had anything to do with the petroleum business. It worked for me, so if it works for you we are ahead of the game. Take care, BOBB

Subaru recommends specifically to not use Sunoco gas. That's what I always used 'till i started working at the dealer and found this out. Now I use bp.

WHAT!? Why does Subaru not like Sunoco gas? It's all I'v ever run in every Subaru I'v owned starting with my BRAT, and i'v never had a bad tank of gas in any of them. But if you can give me a good reason to stop using it then maybe I'll think about switching.

I mostly run Shell & BP/Amoco premium gasoline in my cars.
I do this because they are the least expensive premium gasolines that I find around here. Both the local Shell station and BP/Amoco staion are having good old fashioned price wars with Gulf & Getty stations on opposite corners. In addition this particular Shell station is the local installer for Tire Rack, and it's where I had my tires put on. As an extra added bonus, he still has free air.

Our SVXes seem to like these gasolines.
The 4-cyl. engine in the Outback likes any gasoline. I think it wouldn't care if we poured Crisco oil in the gas tank.

Bobb,

Crisco is the approved rear bearing grease for overseas shipping only. It must be removed at installtion of the bearings. Then they must be repacked with the gelatinous stuff that comes in SPAM containers.

I know that even the goys in the Brooklyn SVX club use SMALTZ to pack the rear wheel bearings. They tell me that they haven't had any bearing failures even on long trips to the swamps in 'Nort Joisey' with alot of dead weight in the trunk.
