Special Starters?

Another question arises. I recieved 4 faulty starters from 4 different manufacturers when my starter gave out. The fourth one finally worked, but after maybe the 2nd or 3rd time of trying to start it, it would just click for a few turns, as if the starter were busted, then start. I had the somewhat iffy factory alarm taken out, but it didn't really help out. Do we HAVE to get our starters from the dealership to get them to work properly? Is there some kind of reset feature that this weird car requires me to do when I change the starter? This is a real pain, and any help would be appreciated.
