I didn't get mine installed either. I went to the shop and they said they wouldn't be able to save the rubber molding from the old windshield, and that they'ad have to get one from the dealer for $20. I gather this will likely be the wrong part. I rescheduled for Monday. Will post pics assuming everything goes as planned.

If you break the damaged glass, can't one remove safely that rubber moulding?

Danny,

The problem is getting through the adhesive that Subaru used to bond the rubber to the glass. Nate has been successful in removing the windshield, then using a heat gun to soften the adhesive.

The main problem is that some of these windshields can be around 20 years old. Constant exposure to heat, ozone and sunlight have taken their toll. Moldings have become brittle, stiff and cracked and would not stand up to the stress of removal.

Same problems that happens to the vacuum lines under the manifold

Re: I scratched the outside of my windshield

I was looking at this on ebay and wondering what the hell it was. They call it a windshield dam.

That mounts on the window frame and the glass with the other rubber part sits in it.

Windshield, Dam
DAM RUBBER F GLASS
WINDSHIELD »Glass
Subaru › Svx › 1992-1997
List Price : $27.95
Your Price : $20.46

The part in question is on the windshield glass, not part #2

Re: I scratched the outside of my windshield

Unfortunately, it's a no go. The molding isn't sold from the dealership like they said, and they refuse to fabricate anything because it's a liability issue for them and they think it would eventually leak. If anyone knows of a place in the Denver area that has an aftermarket windshield solution for the SVX, please let me know.

Thanks

They don't look too bad especially if it is not leaking.

Re: I scratched the outside of my windshield

It definitely doesn't leak. I wailed on it with full pressure at the coin op car wash, and we had a major ice storm, and, as far as I could tell, not a drop.

Personally, when it comes to removing major ice from a windshield, I use a jug of cool water, dribbled slowly along the top of the windshield. Definitely cool, and definitely slowly applied.. Warm or hot water is begging for a cracked windshield. The water will cool off from the ice and then work it's way down under the ice. A couple of jugs later, the ice will slide off the windshield in sheets. Add some de icer fluid to it and it works even better. The trick is to get it flowing under the ice, not to try and melt it all.

Trying round 2. Travos in Thornton. Scheduled for Tuesday. They said they could custom fabricate a molding. Plus, I had to show off my new avatar.
