Rear Wheel Bearings

I know this is a common problem and has been addressed on here several times but I have had trouble finding detailed instructions on how to do it and what parts are needed. So far I've found some pictures here:

http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/user.php?pearlm30|39741

and basic instructions here:

http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/How-To/14313.pdf

I ordered the rear wheel bearing assembly here:

http://replacement.autopartswarehous...0Assy.&dp=true

I've read that you should clean and repack the bearings with hi temp grease here:

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...wheel+bearings

Other then that is there any more information I need to know? I saw a writeup somewhere with pictures but I haven't been able to find it since. Thanks.

Not Easy

It is not a particularly easy job to replace the bearings. For openers, you need a method to press them in and out. So unless you are a reasonably well equipped mechanic, I am not so sure that I would attempt it.

I have a tool set called a Hub Tamer that makes it possible with some figuring out which combination of components to use.

When in doubt use a BFG. It'll fix almost anything.

I was either going to buy a press from Harbor freight or take it to a shop and have them press the bearings.

My local pep boys will press in a new bearing if you take them the bearing and hub assembly for 35$. If you have a local pep boys you could call and ask if they would do it. Only down side is, they will not guantee their work since they did not do the full job. But you will probably run into that anywhere you go. I have had no problems with them though and have taken many bearings from many different cars to them.
Autozone also has tool rentals though and some of the rentals are free or of little cost. You may want to check that out also and see if they have the tools you need.

I wouldn't the people at the pep boys around here to shine my shoes much less do anything with my car. In the country you can get some decent quality people working in auto parts stores but in a metropolitian area you get a bunch of monkey's.

the right combination is 3-4-2-8

BTW don't ever refer to any person as a monkey again, thats very rude and unnecessary.

I agree, I shouldn't insult monkey's like that. They are much more intelligent then Pep Boys employee's.

Crazy question. When pressing the berrings could you use say a 4ton hydrolic jack? If placed between two solid areas, it should be able to assert the proper force needed, put a piece between the berring and hte jack to ensure equal pressure all the way around and just slowly pump the jack, until it's in place. I haven't had to do this yet, but as far as i can tell the theory is sound. Anyone verify if that would/would not work?

Sounds like a good idea to me. The biggest problem would be finding something to press against, the ground and some other immovable object. I would also think you'd want a jack that has very even smooth pressure.

The reason i ask is under my house is a small area with a center beam about 3' off the ground. If i put in a spacer i have a concrete floor beneath it and a house above it, don't think it's going anywhere. I have a nice jack, that should provide pretty even pressure.
