(Gawd, I wanted to stay out of this one, but......) Could you please clarify for me just what "The Issue" is? I thought we simply banned the juvenile blather about whose ride whupped whose ride while barreling down Main Street. I believe this activity would be deemed illegal in at least 49 out of 50 states, & even parts of New South Wales, thus doesn't belong in a public forum that was once dedicated to the care & feeding of a rare cruiser thats considered "slow" by 2004 standards. Did self-rightous old me ever participate in "off-track acceleration contests?" Of course. I was a reckless yout' back before FM radio was invented. I also knew what I did was illegal. If FM radio was just a dream, imagine what was known about Bill Gates. And, the LAST thing we'd ever consider doing would be to post our "road kills" on a high school bulletin board, a neanderthal mini-version of The Net. All illegal activity was considered private - somebody's old man might be a cop. Today, it seems we can't wait to broadcast our lunacy & indiscretions to the world - after all, we might get invited to show off our disfunctions on the Jerry Springer Freak Show. Oops - I'm O/T again. Well, kids, we all know you're gonna' go hunt down poor, unsuspecting fart-can Civics & get your jollies by dispersing humiliation. Just try not to hurt anyone 'til you outgrow your primal urges, and if you think you'll impress your grrrl by posting your "prowess", go find a forum that gives a poop. Ron (4 wheel burnouts? - nah.... just burned out).

As one of the "old ones"... check my registered date and roll it back a month before or so before that before the forum was rebuilt... allow me to post. I usually get ignored, but I've got stuff to say on this subject.
First of all, the mods are right. This is Chris' server, paid for originally with Chris' money... maintained with Chris' time and energy. Way I figure it, what he says goes. I host web pages on my server too... and yes, I do have rules about what can be posted on my server. It's quite simply the fact that I can be held liable for stuff that's on my server, even if I didn't put it there. Imagine if my place were raided because I was hosting kiddy porn??? I know we're talking about leagues of difference here... but not really when you think about it. Personally I feel it wasn't entirely the rules that "drove people away"... personally I stayed gone for a while because (a) for a long time I didn't have an SVX, then (b) didn't have time, and finally (c) because I didn't like how "ricey" the threads were becoming. I guess that latter piece was sort of inevitable. The SVX is a damned nice car that appeals to a lot of people... well now it's cheap enough on the second-hand market that younger people are buying them as a first car. Whether the older (in age) members like it or not, this is a valid thing for younger people to do with their cars... it's sort of like a fashion statement of sorts. Like it or not, I knew I had to live with it if I was going to come back to the board. I returned to the board almost a year ago now... but I keep myself to myself. Generally I don't have much to say on most of the subjects... because I'm not in a position to judge. Younger members post about modifying their cars... that's all fine and good. Actually, I love to see the SVX being adored for the piece of art it actually is... but I also appreciate the desire of others to change that piece of art to be more a part of their own personalities. Generally the last part sounds a little confused. I think in general this process is good, and natural in the life cycle of a car. It's good because it's led to an incredible amount of performance and image modifications that just weren't available when I bought my first SVX in 1997 and first posted a message to Usenet asking why we didn't start an SVX bulletin board or forum (which Jester admitted was one reason he started the Yahoo! club from which this one spawned). I look at the stuff I can do with my SVX today and I'm amazed... and though the image mods are something I'm not interested in, I am gradually working on the performance improvements while I fix the car up. Mod me down, ignore me... whatever. I've spoken. I'm around, too... just quiet. |

For those who need it repeated again...
just don't spend much time here anymore - its like someone else's house that isn't much fun to be at, so why hang out there? i could care less about the streetracing posts- i don't care for that stuff, either. of course, if i was deeply offended, i just wouldn't stick my snout into a thread titled "my SVX sm0k3d a Hyundai, y0!" this place used to be pretty much self-policing - a new member would post a street racing thread, they would get the big lecture from the other members, and everyone got the "vibe" that that stuff isn't really cool or appreciated on this site. That, in a nutshell, is the issue. That we couldn't just leave well enough alone. It's funny how so many people complain that "this place just ain't what it used to be" and then go on to say they support the new rules, etc. This place was just fine and great without those rules. There was NO need for them. As it has been said, the population of this board showed itself MORE than responsible enough to look after some of the less mature members...remember, we survived ROB so I think we could pretty much handle anything. But NOOO there has to be rules, rules, rules. Attaching more bricks to the dog's head. Where did the idea that we need this sort of thing come from? Was it the conflict between a few members? The agenda of some people with nothing better to do? I have a tough time believing that Chris just came to the mods and said, look guys, i've been watching this forum closely and we need some more rules! He sounds to me like he's a pretty busy guy and as such, I would imagine he doesn't spend his days perusing every thread to see what's going on. Things are reported to him through moderators who do have a sense of what's going on. Therefore, if rules are put in place that are clearly unecessary, the only reason i can see is miscommunication, whether it be accidental or purposeful, on the part of the moderators. I can't say, but based on how certain moderators react or don't react, I get a sense that it's not how we're told it is. I'm saving that paragraph on my computer for the next (which would be about the 6th) time I have to post about it. |

Here, let me reiterate from an earlier post.
NOBODY GIVES A DAMN IF YOU BEAT A NEON, A FART CAN CIVIC, A MUSTANG, A CAMAROBIRD OR ANYTHING INBETWEEN. This forum is filled with more mature enthusiasts, most of which dont care about your kills. As a matter of fact, most are against street racing in general, whether it be chasing a car down the road at a high rate of speed, impromptu street light races or organized weekend races. So why do you bother posting about them? I suggest that you find another forum to post on, there are many local import/domestic scene boards which have asshats that love to race, and they do wanna hear your kill stories. Its people like you creating a hostile environment that drive the members away, not more rules. Get that fact straight. The fact that the mods have left this thread open for discussion speaks to the continued openness of the forums. All of the other boards I frequent would lock threads like this down as soon as one of the mods sees it, because of people like you that feel the need to defy authority. I can't believe you keep pressing the issue. It comes down to this - the board belongs to Chris, Chris decided to curb the moronic street racing posts, and the moderators uphold those rules. You don't like it? Tough.

At this point, it doesn't look like any thing we say will make any difference in the way you think.
The only thing that I don't understand is that you say "i could care less about the streetracing posts- i don't care for that stuff, either." Then why are you going on and on about how you want to be able to do this. Is it that if you can't do it, then you want to do it? I don't understand your thinking. You have really made a mountain out of a mole hill! Chis and Mike selected a few members who he wanted to look after the sight, posts, and try to keep order on this site, because he can not be here 24/7. We, the moderators, have tried to keep the site the same way it has always been, but it is changing because of the members, age of members, and interest areas. A major forum (Not Exactly SVX) was added, and that has changed the site more than anything else. I am not saying that it is bad, but it has changed the flavor of the site. We also have seen members push as far as they can to see where the limits are. Some are still trying. I am sorry that some of you are not happy campers right now, but I don't really see what can be done to keep everyone happy. We (the mods) will still try to do our job, and attempt to keep peace and harmony here.

I think we have located the problem, but the trouble is that self policing communities only work in small groups, a small village can be self policing, but even a small town needs rules. It's simple, the larger the crowd the more rules you will need. If you have 10 people and 1 steps out of line then the other 9 can bring them back into line, but if there are 1000 people and 20 step out of order they can band together and create quite a problem. What I don't understand now is why the rules are a problem, acording to the prior statement the underlying understanding is the same as it was before, but now there is a rule to back it up. Nothing has really changed except for the fact that it is in writing and the author will be warned. It's not that difficult to avoid talking about street racing, so skip and there is no problem. When I first joined a few months ago and not long before the rules took affect this place was getting fairly hostile, now with the rules peace has been restored with the small exception of the few who insist their feet have been steped on...
