Sensor location
There are two sensors, but one is called a thermometer and is for the guage in the instrument cluster.
A separate sensor is for the computer. Both are located on the driver's side of the engine at the top at the rear. The beauty is that you should get virtually no coolant leakage when you remove it because of it's position. If you are getting a low (and inaccurate) reading on your guage, I don't believe it will affect engine performance. |

I don't think both temp sensors are the same. I think there are too the right of the throttle body and under the intake manifold.

anyone can provide the pics of location of temp sensors?
does the subaru.parts.com have the pic and parts numbers? ok so there are 2 sesnsors and u can see that gauge one is bad just because u have strange readings, but u never can check the computer one... right? |

ok another idea: the manual says that if u got rough idle check the connecters to ECU first (power of ECU)....
maybe its not a bad idea? so its the ECU which controls RPMs at idle (as it can be issue for me) so anyone with ideas where i can find it? maybe it can help... as i ve been all around the car with my *magic* (khe khe) hands coz i dont believe its fuel pump or anything serious... if its fuel pump or regulator they would be already dead... cheers |

ECUs are under the dash on the driver's side. If you lay on the floor looking up, you'll see a neat row of four units with two-high connectors running to them. That's them.
Also, the main relay is just aft of them in the center. It's the brown one and you'll feel it click when you put the key to "ON". |

Check my locker for a picture of the ECU location.

Fortunately the problematic temp sensor is the cheaper of the 2 sensors. It's the one with 2 wires connected to it.

possible point of interest?
Hmm...well it seems as though we all are stuck in a pickle. Its kind of disappointing that this esteemed board cant think of a solution between us. My stuttering has become so bad that its hard to gain highway speed on the on ramps! The jerky idle and sputtering under power is especially noticeable on my car b/c of the flowmaster muffler, where the car occasionally hiccups and pops during the sputtering. One interesting thing a friend of mine noticed while we were standing outside of my car while it was sputtering, was that every time that it did so, there was what sounded like an exhaust valve tapping? Sure enough, every time there was a pop or sputter, there was a tap quickly before it. Could someone look into or suggest how this might be related or tied into other suggestions? The car is almost too bad to drive now, having no power at all, and not feeling dependable.
This thing is getting depressing. My belts squeal all the time, the windshield is cracked in half, the windows dont come down smoothly, the antenna is broken, the car stutters, the window switch no longer has auto up/down, the speakers are blown, and the list goes on and on...but I will continue to drive this money pit if I can get the sputtering solved...so wont someone be my salvation!! Thank You all, lets try and nail this problem!
