Ext. Trans Cooler w/Temperature Guage

Used, stacked plate external transmission cooler (8 x 11 x 3/4) in excellent condition. I believe it's rated at ~20,000 GVW, and it comes with a nice transmission temperature gauge. $65 (includes shipping).

DO NOT install a used cooler, it could have metal particles attached to it internally that require a special machine to remove, and that service will cost more than a new cooler. It's a risk, and I wouldn't risk taking my transmission for saving a couple bucks.

Well correct me if I am wrong but....when you install a new one doesn't it then become used?

Yes, but you installed a new one, not one that has already been installed. I have not heard about the metal particals, and wouldn't a filter take them out of the fluid as it circulates? I don't know if he has a filter installed, but was just wondering.

Earl is correct. A used cooler is fine as long as the fluid has been changed before the install. The poarticles you are speaking of are from the clutch plates. All transmission clutches wear.

I WOULD NOT have any problem installing a used cooler! Just flush it out before the install.

Here, I found this on the floor when I was sweeping up at the shop. Or maybe it came to me in a newsletter for automatic transmission rebuilders? Yeah, maybe that was it.

Transmission Cooler Flushing
Transmission oil coolers must be properly flushed using a power flush machine. These power flushers properly flush and pulse transmission coolers and lines to remove metal, dirty oil, and material from a failed transmission prior to installing a remanufactured transmission.
Using solvent and air is not the proper procedure for flushing out transmission coolers and lines. There are store bought products such as Trans Flush that aid you in flush your transmission cooler and lines, but does not produce the same results as using a power flusher.

Problems Associated with Improper Flushing
Hydraulic Transmission Types - Improperly flushed transmission cooler and lines will leave behind debris can cause sticky governors, wrong gear starts, stuck valves, shift issues, and premature failures in your newly installed remanufactured transmission.
Electronic Transmission Types - Improperly flushed transmission cooler and lines will leave behind debris can wreak havoc in electrical controlled transmissions. Electrical solenoids and valve bodies when energized under normal operation act like electro magnets. These "Electro-magnets" will tend to pickup any metal or debris left in the transmission cooler and/or oil. This can cause malfunctioning in valve bodies and solenoids causing wrong gear starts, shift issues, low line pressure, skipped shifts and late shifts.

Engine Stalling - Many times a plugged or restricted transmission cooler will cause the engine to "Stall" when put into reverse. This is cause from a lack of oil feed to the transmission causing the lock-up torque converter to engage or restrict flow.



Mandatory Transmission Cooler Replacement
Many vehicles after transmission failure require that the transmission cooler/radiator be replaced in order to reduce repeated failures. This mandated by the factory in many service bullentins as well as by ATR. The reason is this...Many of these vehicles have a "fin type" transmission cooler in the radiator and after a major transmission failure, the debris from the failure plugs these fins and will restrict flow causing damage to a transmission quickly.
This can be avoided in one of two ways:
1. Replace the radiator in the vehicle (Trans cooler in radiator), which is very costly.
2. Use an External By Pass Cooler

An inexpensive way is to completely by pass the trans-cooler in the radiator (not running through the radiator cooler at all), and installing a Heavy-Duty external transmission cooler. These are easy to find at any Auto Parts Supply House. ATR recommends a large transmission cooler that fits your vehicle's front radiator/condenser space.

Gentlemen,

Perhaps some background would be helpful. I installed the new cooler on my SVX when I purchased the car used, and I replaced the external transmission filter at the same time. The transmission was replaced by Subaru for the first owner. I put about 35K on it and we decided to trade it in for a newer 4 door vehicle under the Federal program.

I didn't see any reason to send after market products to the salvage yard, so I decided to remove cooler and offer it for sale.

On a side note related to SVX transmissions, I found the best way to address proper warm-up in the winter and effective cooling in the summer issues, was to by-pass the OEM cooler. I installed a separate heat exchanger and valved in the external cooler for additional cooling in the summer and received very favorable results (both winter and summer).
