Different engine +

Well I have desided to go ahead and fix my car, and found someone to do the work, I had debated it for a while, thought about parting it out but I am now going to go ahead and fix it, and want to make sure I have everything covered. I am giving this car another chance and want to make sure everything gets replaced that REALLY should be replaced.
This is what my car is going to have done:

Different engine (used)
Timing belt
water pump
NGK plugs
Air condition compressor + recharge
New radiator hoses
New accessory belts
Transmission cooler
All new door locks
passenger window switch
Splash guard for under radiator-engine

Is there anythng that should be replaced while everything is out of the car that I did not mention, or that should be replaced when doing any of the above?

In case some of you dont know, my car burns and leaks oil in many places and the engine whistles and makes many weird noises, thats why we are going for a different engine.
My car does not have a transmission cooler on it right now, when I first got the car we did change the fluid and "filter" but it did not have a cooler on it when we bought it, and since the trannys are known to go bad, I would like to add one to it.

Valve Cover gaskets
Cam seals
Front Crank seal
Water pump if the motor has more than 100k on it.
Check all the t-belt idlers while doing the t-belt.

I believe he said the motor had somewhere around 120k on it, so it is definately getting the water pump/timing belt.

This is the car I plan on taking on a fairly long trip at the end of march, so I want to do this right the first time, so i have no regrets later.

I almost regret getting this car at times because i have already put 1500$ into it (in parts alone) (plus the 3500 I paid), now i am going to put close to 2k$ more into it, plus I dont know anything about the tranny in it other than the previous owner said it was rebuilt, and it did have a subaru remanufactured sticker on it, but it did not have a tranny cooler. I only hope the cooler saves its life and I dont have another couple thousand going into this car anytime in the future, because when that happens it probably will be parted or sold.

While you have the engine out of the car, change ALL of the soft lines on the automatic transmission, power steering, power steering cooler, any brittle vacuum lines, ESPECIALLY under the manifold, SUBARU thermostat and gasket, have the engine pressure washed while it's out.
If you are going for performance, now is the time for phenolic spacers.

I won't even mention porting,
Good Luck.

Get used to it man... The SVX is a money pit... Take mine for example...

- $9,950 for the car in 2001
- ~$3,000 for the 5MT swap in 2003
- ~$1,400 for the suspension
- ~$500 for the Audi TT HID's
- ~$1,100 for the Stebro Exhaust
- ~$1,000 for the wheels
- ~$500 for the new tires (Kumho MX's)
- *Rebuild from my little accident back in 2004* ~$2,000

The numbers add up to alot... It pains me to think of how much money, including all the services (only at Subaru dealers) that I have spent on this thing ... But I look at it another way. EVERYTIME I get in it, I feel like I am 12 again. That is when I saw one for the first time, and I fell inlove with it...

Of course most of that list were "Elective Surgeries", and not necessary to keep it on the road….so that’s not a true cost of ownership…

Unfortunately I have not been able to do any modifications because the car keeps taking the money for things to keep it on the road. As with all the subaru's I have had up till now. I tend to pay more for a car I think will be a good one (because the guy I buy it from says so) only to get screwed over and have it need more money than it is worth.

The only good thing is, even though it needs so much stuff, it is still on the road, I feel like if I fix it up it will last a long time, it seems to be a pretty strong runner.

Once the engine work is done and she desides to work correctly I will probably save up to do a dual exaust and a manual swap. I have always loved a manual car.

I added Thermostat & seal (got it already) and All the seals to the list. I cant wait to get her all fixed up. I am very very excited, because I am hoping she will perform like a new car once its done.

May I ask who is doing this for you?

Are you having Budfreak work on it or is going to be done in Columbus? Just asking for I have an extra engine that I may have rebuilt in a few years. (Honestly, I am dreaming.... )

i know what you mean

now this is a group i can get onboard with. i am going through the same thing. the transmission will be the last. i am going to either trade it in, or sell it once it's up and running. i need a car that will run and be reliable. i am in a major bind right now, but this too shall pass. pretty cool first car for my son, though. time to move on. whoever gets in next most likely won't have to do very much to it. but a 19 year old can really put miles on a car.

one more thing

these cars are for people who have another car. they can keep the svx in the garage and take it out on a nice summer day. they do have their purpose. i am just not a wealthy woman. how i wish they would just make them again so it wouldn't be so difficult. maybe i can see why they stopped.

I was once in the same boat a long time ago. I ended up selling my car to SVXfiles in the summer of 06. I loved that car with everything I had....I always dreamed about having a red sports car when I was a kid. Everything added up and I needed a new car to make my long commutes. So i have my new 06 impreza. I like this car a lot but when I have enough money saved up I will buy another SVX ( probably a pearly)....and have the 6 spd in it. I really miss having that Flat 6 motor and the SVX's unique looks.

That is so funny and yet so sad. The one wannarace928 has tis the one I had bid on once through eBay. I did find one through Autotrader and my next one will be through svx world network forums. This site is a wonderful site. I believe this site can offer you strength let alone its a great support system for the SVX(unkown).
