Ran out of gas ::: stalling :(

What an idiot I am. I ran out of gas the other day.......not the car stalls out now and then. I replaced the gas filter, seemed ok, ......but now is stalling again.

I figured it was the filter. What else can I do?

Thanks

Tapper

If it's not the fuel filter, then I would guess it's the fuel pump. I ran out once as well a couple of years ago and it ran just fine after refilling the tank, didn't even change the filter. I do however, use fuel system cleaner regularly, so maybe that helped to keep the tank clean and sediments to a minimum.

I doubt that running out of gas would affect anything. The pump takes fuel from the bottom of the tank all the time, so running out would not cause sediments to be sucked up. The stalling is probably related to something else. Maybe the MAF meter.

So its just a myth that sediment may be sucked up when you run out of gas.??? It has never stalled once before I had ran out of gas and I have had her a few years. (that is way I thinks its related, but am willing to consider other possibilties)

Today I drove her hard trying to clear any blockages. It seemed to be going very well. Then was I was just cruising along real easy.....stalled right out at 60 mph. I put in nuetral and a quick turn of the key started right up and put back in drive and hit the accelerator and seemed ok.

I wish I had used fuel system cleaner...I never have. Do you think the fuel pump is clogged or just just starting to malfuction. (I suppose if it can't be cleaned, it doesn't matter either way)

I seem to recall reading in the forums that the SVX's fuel pump is partially cooled by the gas in the tank. I ran out of gas in the middle of really cold winter day. If your situation occurred during a hot summer day, then I suppose it might be possible that the pump could be damaged.

definatly try a strong cleaner. toulene. x???lene something like those. do a search. i run the toulene once every 3 to 6 months before trips for better gas mileage and clensing. u can buy at home depot or lowes or any hardware store. just mix with a gulp of tranny fluid and filler up. for specs i think its a gallon can.

The thought on sediment is it floats on top of the gas.

As you let the fuel level get lower and lower the floating sediment gets closer and closer to the pump intake.

i recently (yesterday) ran out of gas as well

i kind of asked for it, as i ride around town all day on empty....
and then add like 2 dollars when i need it (hey im a brokeass!)

kinda like that seinfeld episode where kramer is like "COMON BABY" and gets all fired up about how far the car will go with the light on, and then... put put puttttttttttttt klunk

newho that sucks now your car is sputtering...

i use the fuel cleaners or octane boosters whenver i fill up, so maybe that is the difference and that is why you are sputtering, since you did not...

i guess those things work... cuz i am constantly on empty and no sputtering

altho: i think that in the heat gasoline evaporates quckier when you have less in the tank?

well goodluck on getting your gremlin

This would be three different possible sensors?

Yeah, unfortunately there are several sensors that could cause this.
