If you have the time try using an ice pick - just jab the bottom of the filter and let it drain for a while...

Oil and Filters

Hi Jay, If you go to www.mobil1.com you can put in your cars info and they will tell you which oil and filter to use. Also you will need the gasket that goes on the drain plug. Although you tighten the filter by hand a quarter or half turn past fully seated you will need a filter wrench to get it off. And six quarts it is. You can buy Mobil1 in a five quart jug and then add one quart and your good to go. If you go to the Mobil1 web site, you can register so that each time you buy a case[six quarts] you get a credit that you can redeem for Mobil1 stuff. And last but not least. The Subaru Filter can't be beat for normal oil changes. Take care, BOBB

The new eco tec is easy though its a canister on top of the engine. and yes many of the cars that take the VO40 (oil filter) have it tight up aginst the exhaust cars like the geo metro/prism toyota carolla/camry and a few others... but the sunfire you have to reach up and pull it over the steering rack past a crossmember and then you have to pull the exhaust out of the way just to let it through.

Sounds like my friend's old grand am. What a piece of crap.

The wife's old toyota celica has the filter on the front of the engine next to the exhaust manifold and upside down! It is always hotter than hell and the second you loosen it oil drips all over everything. Great design.

The 1.8L suby engines had the best design. Oil filter on the bottom front and laying sideways. You loosen it a few turns and the oil drains out nicely right into your catch pan. I could change the oil in my wagon faster than the duke boys can change a tire on the General Lee.

Justa little FYI we share oil filters with the mid 90's model honda civics also, so don't think they will ever be in short supply due to rarity. I was shocked to find that the filters were the same the first time i did mine. I expected to need to order one

The OEM one is different though from the Legacy one. Aftermarketers just don't wanna go to the expense. There is a check valve thingie that is there to keep the oil from draining back when the engine is turned off. All Subie pans are fairly big compared to other vehicles. I think my f-250 takes 5 quarts when changing the filter! That's not much more than my Brat took at 4.2.

Funny... I just finished changing my oil a little while ago.

This is probably the same link you're talking about: http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html

I stopped using Fram after I read this guy's earlier version, where he was a little more vocal in expressing opinions (he had to pull that version and tone it down due to legal threats by at least one company -- see the FAQ link).

Advance Auto Parts has a deal on Purolator PureONEs -- free $5 gas card (by mail-in rebate) when you purchase either two PureONE filters or one each Premium Plus Oil filter and air filter. Rebate form (PDF). Good through July 30.

Don't most aftermarket filters have this? See that oil filter review.

I find that it takes more than 6 quarts to get mine to the full mark on the dipstick.

Yes, I think 6.3 is the spec. I usually dump in 6 and a half at each oil change.

I normally use the purolator pure one but a while ago I scored a bunch of oem filters on ebay and have been using them for a while now.

I tend not to believe things I read on the internet as fact just because they are there. My first EA-81 never had an issue with fram (which it had from birth). Neither did my second one. Does that mean they're great no, does that mean their crap? Probably not. As for the check thingie, well the OEM legacy one doesn't have it so my guess is no, they don't.

I don't know, I find lately that all my usual opinions about oil are changing. For example, I used to think "buy the very best oil you can buy, it's worth it" - but now Mobil 1 has this 15,000 mile synthetic oil, and I'm wondering if it IS worth it. As it stands, I change the regular Mobil 1 long before it thinks of approaching 15,000 miles, so what benefit could it have for me?
Also, I used to think heavier weight = more protection. Not sure about that now, and another thread on lifter noise seems to indicate a lighter weight oil may be best. My old WRX and now my Outback do just fine on 5W30 - I think I'll try it in the SVX.
As for filters, it's kind of the same thing. If you change at 3,000 miles are any of the major brands going to be that different?

Oil Filters

IMHO, there is a HUGE difference in oil filters.
Purolator is by far the biggest manufacturer of filtration. With Wix following a distant second. Many OE and most aftermarket(CarQuest, NAPA, etc.)are either Puro or Wix. Virtually NOBODY relables Fram.
If you take the time (and a few bucks) to "open" some oil filters, you will be amazed.
The quality and number of pleats in a Fram will scare you!
Purolator and Wix are even far better than O.E.M.
From what I understand, there are three OEM sources for Subaru!
None of these are Purolator or Wix. Two are Korean and one is Middle East!
The OE has only 2/3 the # of pleats(compared to Puro,), and the quality of the media is cr@p! Same with our fuel filter by the way! OE sucks...depends upon where the Dealer sources them from. Some OE just have a porous PLASTIC separator wall inside, no media at all!
As far as anti-drain back valves, almost all oil filters have one. It is far more rare to not have one.
As someone else mentioned earlier, our oil filter is also used on Honda products. And, Chevy Spectrum(yikes),Geo, Ford, Hyundai, Isuzu, Mitsu. etc.
Because the filters are multi-application, (the threads size and gasket dims are the commonality), a single filter fits multiple products, so less part #'s if you include the valve in them all.
I changed the oil on my SVX and Outback the other day. I was curious why Purolator list two different filters, when the thread/gasket is the same.
Ends up, the stud the filter screws onto is longer on the Outback engine. This means the filter flange(where the threads are) is concave(indented).
Some manufacturers decide to consolidate filter #s and just use the flat flange filter(SVX style) to cover both application. No other differences (inside or outside) at all!
Just thought I would add all this info to the conversation.
Can't sleep, so I was perusing the threads. Sorry for the length!
I'll shut-up now!!
mile-hi-bri - Brian
