I think for $850 it better have the quiafes in it already, or have like 1,000 miles on it. It seems high anyway I only paid $450 for my other Legacy tranny, but then again I haven't found any other turbo trannys........Where did you find this tranny?

$850 Seams high to me also, I'd say $500 tops if it doesn't have to many miles on it.
The Turbo tranny isn't any tougher than the Regular Legacy tranny, just geared a little higher (which probably makes it weaker), and has the hydralic clutch set-up.

Holy crap $3,400 to $4,500 for a gear set? I'd just get the damn 6speed. Maybe I can just get 5th gear? I,ll have to get it apart and check out the rest of it, 2nd is a little wierd too.

Sorry to hear about your problems; I got my original five speed through http://www.car-part.com and it was about $500 delivered for a 40k mile unit from a 98 Legacy GT.

Imprezza 5 spd problems

may lead or crossover to SVX 5 spd problems
No, this may not be the same problem this guy has, but I have a good friend with a 00 Imprezza and he's part of a big forum like ours. More then 70% of them all have this problem here, I had him explain what happens:

"Mine is a cable clutch, the first thing that wears and goes is the output shaft from the tranny were the throwout bearing rides which means you will have to replace the tranny case, then the pivot ball punches through the clutch fork for both peices are made out of crappy metal. When the output shaft of the tranny groves deep enough the bearing catches on it and causes massive stress on the fork / cable and I also broke 2 cables. Big nightmare."

So for other SVX 5 spd owners, keep an eye out for this on your SVX.

The hyd. set-up's throw out bearing rides on the same part as the cable set-up, most of the Impreza owner's failure rate is induced by abuse, many ara young and never had a AWD manual before, so driving style and lack of experience contribute to early retirement of the tranny.

Talking Possible Repair

5th gear is usually accessible by pulling the extension housing. Removing the transmission may not even be necessary. Pull the housing determin what is wrong and order your parts.

I was given a Bronco II (running) for doing this repair on a Dodge Dakota. It only took a couple of hours and about $1.50 in parts!

I disagree Huck, I chalk it up to some shabby Subaru
engineering on this one. My friend rarely beats on his
car and it only has 30K miles on it thus far. Its a common
complaint with almost all Imprezza owners with cable operated
clutches. I love Subaru as much as the next guy but this to
me is one of things that isnt just brought on by the drivers.
Plus you think Svx owners with a new 5 spd are going to
drive any easier on them with more hp on tap ??

I didn't make my point clear, the throw-out bearing slides on this part, regardless of the type of activation the clutch uses (cable/Hyd) it wears the same no matter what type clutch set-up one has, as this part is the same on either.

Um..ya. Anyway the tranny style is exclusive to 91-94 Turbo Legacy or any year WRX. In the time I spent driving it to and from Reading I really liked the ratios that are in the tranny, good acceleration and highway cruising. I belive the WRX,s all have more peeky ratios. So I'd really like to stay with the same gears. If I don't find the same replacment tranny by the time I have time to look at mine. I'll take it apart and see exacly what I need to get it together again. I'm pissed, it's finally nice out and I want to drive my SVX. I wanted to take it to the drag strip this summer, and put the EJ22motor and tranny in my Loyal but I can't because my car won't stop breaking. GRRRRRRRR!
