It didn't necessarily eat the whole tranny, just the transfer clutch or solenoid at best. Could be a lot worse than what you are experiencing.

how bad is it for the transmission to run around in 2wd until i can afford the 5spd?
will it cause the rest of the trans to fail?

i ran in fwd with a busted clutch pack for a few weeks.. i've heard stories of someone driving 1500 miles with the fwd fuse in.. it isn't GOOD for your tranny, but your transmission probably won't explode.. if it were my car, i'd only drive it in fwd for a maximum of three months before either replacing the transfer clutches or putting in a five-speed..
bear in mind that once you get your old auto tranny out of the car, you can rebuild it and probably sell it for somewhere between $1500 and $2000.. -adam |

You just bought the car, check to see if there is a 90 day warrenty. Take it back to the dealer and file a complaint.

no 90 day, was part of the deal, take it then and there, as is no warrenty for 5000 cause once they cleaned it up and gave it the once over or so, and put a warenty on it they were gonna be asking 8000 for it (probably would've put a new trans in it for the extra 3000)

The real issue is whether there are any bits and pieces circulating through the tranny fluid as a result of the loss of AWD. If it was caused by a parts breakup, then the more you drive, the more you risk getting something stuck deeper in the tranny where it shouldn't be.
