A thread to document getting my SVX back up and running

It's been parked for about a year now. I feel terrible about that. the clear coat on the hood has started to peal, and that is the least of my problems.

I parked it because it wouldn't start. Check engine light was on... the code told me at first it was a cam angle sensor... good luck and some boneyard searches found 2... I replaced both and the car ran..for about a week. When it wouldn't start again... Engine code told me it was the CRANK angle sensor.. list price was (is) 435.00.... was out of my budget for the car at that point..so the car sat.. for a year.
Something about what Earl told me during my first angle sensor bout was that it MIGHT be a weak battery..well by this time the battery in the car was a total loss...so I bought one yesterday... hooked up all the things I had taken off and turned it over...as I knew..it wouldn't start... I hadn't replaced the crank angle sensor. However... now.. I'm getting a plethora of codes.. one each for the fuel injectors and the bad crank sensor or circuit. the little blinky light blinked so often with so many different codes... I again lost hope...
But today is another day...and I've determined to get the crank sensor... and service the fuel rail and injectors... and the other things as they come up. So...here we go.. I've got a helmet cam, a HD camcorder and my phone.. is there any room on the server for this?

Believe it or not a bad (two wire) water temperature sensor can show both a bad crank and cam angle sensor.
If it is bad, it MUST be replaced with an actual Subaru water temperature sensor.
They are less than $25.00 last time that I checked.

Re: A thread to document getting my SVX back up and running

Last time I was having starting problems the CE light was for a bad cam angle sensor...found one in a bone yard and replaced it... car started right up... Couldn't find a good crank angle sensor in the bone yards here..so I just let the car sit for most of a year... I can just imagine the crap I'm gonna have to clean out... I ordered the crank angle sensor today... Should be here early next week... I'll go from there... might have a look at the fuel injectors this weekend... I'll take pictures... Thanks Tom

Is there room on the server for this? No. Last time I checked, to upload a photo you have to shrink and crop it to about 100 x 100 pixels. Good luck in your endeavors.

ok...ok.... I've looked back and I see a theme of me ignoring the water temp sensor... is this the one right behind the alternator? can you show me a picture?
also..would that keep the engine from firing?

1) Bad dog!

2)Drivers side,
on the coolant crossover tube,
under the intake manifold,
at the back of the engine,
brown sensor,
two wire connection,
just above the single wire water temperature sensor.
3) No!
4) Actually I think so.

We did not take it out brcause the last person
(if there ever WAS one)
did not put anti-seize on the spark plugs threads and as a result WE believed
that with the spark plug (if id did not break off)
we would have removed a big chunk of the head!

Re: A thread to document getting my SVX back up and running

Is there something wrong with cam/crank sensors from Rock Auto? Because they are about $150~ for either one right now...

The two companies that offer the sensors both have one year warranties...

Seems worth the risk on a secondary vehicle vs $450 or junkyard.

Prices are all over the board. The jury is still out... My problem could be a wiring problem.

And the verdict is wiring problem. Lots of them. Sensors were ok, wiring after 20 some years gets a bit brittle it seems. So now it's running and pretty well. a few lingering problems. Speedometer works until engine (transmission?) warms up and then it just fall to 0. After a stop, as little as a half hour, and it works again for a bit.

The good: sure feels good to be driving it again.

I had hoped to document some of the work I did..but I quit my job, moved into a 24' motorhome and I've been a bit busy fixing it up. I sent the car to a good trustworthy mechanic (he's done a lot of work on various cars of mine here in Salt Lake). So I cheated.
