Sump Repair or Replacement

Hi Guys,

Some knowledge required please. The sump on my 92 has started to drip oil. I my local garage has had a look and it can't be welded as the metal is very weak. So, where can I expect to get a replacement or is there a company out there that would make me a new one. Otherwise, car passed MOT so I really don't want to scrap or part it out yet. As you may remember from the Cosford meet, she looks pretty ok.

Best wishes to all

Wyn

Re: Sump Repair or Replacement

If I did not have another pan to replace it with I would remove it and gas weld or gas braze it.
It is plenty thick enough.
A GREAT welder can weld tin foil!
I would not weld it in place only because the oil can flash fire at about 750°f.

Re: Sump Repair or Replacement

Glad I haven't sorted my camcover weeps yet! May just save the sump from rusting through.
Our works van suffered this fate, and sorry to say had to replace it as it was 'thin' everywhere, not just at one spot. Some kind, caring soul had used some body filler in the past. If you get stuck for a sump I have a complete spare engine, but I'm sure an internet trawl will get you sorted. If the rot is localised on yours may I suggest brazing a plate in? Obviously the sump will need to be off but the lower temperature of brazing will minimize distortion and 'seal' better than weld.
