Re: click click click...start? click click start!

I was always taught to start with the basics...... check the starter and starter connections before going deep into complicated electronic systems.

Re: click click click...start? click click start!

Well I am doing the bosch relay mod as well, but I couldn't find a bosch part number in any of the threads concerning the mod. I asked a guy at napa for a 30 amp relay and he showed me a book will a whole bunch of them and asked which one I needed and I said 'good question', so... does anyone know the bosch part number? Thanks

You are right, of course. We have to do more testing to rule out the starter and other components. Always!

They normally keep the bosch relay on the rack with other components. If needed, can get the # for you.

I believe we are talking about the starter solenoid circuit. Sure starters do have problems, but I don't think I would be over stating it if I said that at least 90% of all SVXs that experience, just a click, when the key is turned, have the trouble that I have suggested, and will be assisted by adding the Bosch relay mod.

Harvey.
Absolutely, Harvey!

It would not be a 30 amp relay... far from it!

Keith
That would be great! I went to autozone and checker and they said they both stopped carrying them and that napa would have it, so I went there and then there were just too many choices

I will go by napa's warehouse and get a # tomorrow am Not sure about the amperage rating but don't think it is a 30 amp circuit? Just not sure. Will know tomorrow.

Re: click click click...start? click click start!

you would probably want it with a mounting bracket

If this doesn't work let me know

Re: click click click...start? click click start!

might click the link and print the page and take it with you to the auto parts store.

The relay has the numbers of each connection and shows what the function of each part of it, right on the relay. The numbers should correspond with the numbers on the Busch starter wiring diagram that is floating around.

Lightbulb Re: click click click...start? click click start!

There are two other possibilities for this type problem, and two solutions:
the ignition lock/key assembly fits into the cast housing behind the "security cage" on the steering column. Even the newest SVX's are a dozen years old, now. On my car the key could even be removed while the car was running. At the other end of this cast housing is an ignition switch & pigtail that can look good from the outside but cause the exact symptoms described.

I replaced both. It is a good idea to replace the headless "security" screws/bolts with regular bolts or to cut a flat blade screwdriver slot in these fasteners to facilitate removal and tightening. Mine were always coming loose (easily determined when the entire ignition lock assembly rattles and moves around).

I was told I "needed a new starter" for about 10 years, from 3 different shops: my original starter works wonderfully and has for 17 years and almost 175,000 miles.

Cheers!
