Dumb question...codes..

This is going to sound really dumb to most of you, but like I said before, i am mechanically retarded...
So how do I check the diagnostic codes? My Check engine light is coming on, and i want to know what is going on. I tried downloading the how-to guide, but my dumb Mac wont do it.... Any tips?
I think it might have to do with my Dad changing my timing belt last month... or it getting a lot hotter out, and all the stations around me use crappy gas??
