no extra advice....if you've ever changed a starter you won't find the SVX to be any harder....in fact easier than most, you can do it leaning over the fender.

I've got a couple of used ones

if you're interested. Let me know. You could have your's rebuilt while the used one was in it's place. A back-up is a nice thing to have.

Todd

Todd.... Do you have an engine to go with that starter?

To change the starter.....
Put the front of the car up on ramps. It helps the back.
Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.
Move the rubber boot off the wire on the starter.
Remove the 10mm nut. Don't drop it and the washer.
Note how the wires are positioned on the post.
Look at the wire with lock connetor on the starter.
I think the plastic "tang" gets pushed in to release it.
Do not break the connector. It must unlock to come off.
Remove the wire with connector.
Remove the bolt and the nut from the starter. These can be hard to get off if the tranny and the starter have not been out. The nut also holds a ground wire clamp and the engine to the transmission.
Remove the starter.
Put it all back together.
Use a torque wrench for the bolt and nut.

Sometimes starters do not work if the voltage is low. I assume you checked the battery and alternator out? Of course if the starter in question sounds like a bucket of bolts, just ignore this.

Yes I do John. One engine for each starter I have (one in the car, one on the stand, one in pieces on the shelf)

Marlettpat

Where are you getting the alt? Lancaster Starter and Alt did a GREAT job rebuilding mine for $125. I'd think they could rebuild your starter as well. What exactly is your starter doing? It may not actually be the starter. If you want I can lend a hand some afternoon or evening if you need me to.

you've pretty much confused me but maybe it's just my reading of your words.

Normally if someone told me the battery wouldn't hold a charge I would say the battery was going/gone bad. The alternator clicking is a symptom of a low battery as well and you may not have to change out the starter.

When it is running do you get the lights that indicate a bad alternator?

Can you jump it and get it running for say 20 minutes, then turn it off and get it to start again?

Can you swap out a known good battery from a friend and see how it works (or get it to an Autozone or equivalent and let them test the system)?
