electrical problems

My car was parked (untouched) for about 4 hours while I was at work, when I tried to unlock it with the remote it would not unlock. So, I unlocked it with the key and started it up. MY CLOCK AND STEREO DIDNT WORK!!! I checked all the fuses including the 15A for the radio but it was fine. I traded it for a new one and still didn't work. All the other electrical systems seem to be working OK. Also, my keyless entry remote isn't working anymore. Could the problems be related? If the remote was the only thing that broke I would just replace the battery but something else might be going on. ANY IDEAS???

I had the same thing happen...only it was my clock, climate control, and cigarette lighter that stopped working. I took it to my dealer and they found a short behind the dashboard which caused the clock fuse to blow... they fixed it for around $86.00. Weird things can also happen if your sunvisor wires short out. Check the wiring at the end of the sunvisor (where it connects to the car) and see if the wires are frayed. There are fixes on the forums here.

UPDATE:

So here's the list of everything that's not working: clock, stereo, dome & spot lights. I found the offending fuse. It's the 10A clock fuse under the hood. I tried to replace it but it sparced and instantly fried the new fuse. Must be a short...

I recently (on Saturday) had circuit city install my new stereo, do you think I should take it back to them and *****?

I haven't been messing with anything that could have created a short. Any ideas guys?

I would remove the visors and check the condition of the wires there - they are notorious for causing bizarre issues. Assuming they are OK, then I'd go back to CC (have a BFH in your back pocket just in case).

Thanks for your replies so far!!!

I checked out the visors (which had already been cut by previous owner) they did a sloppy job and there were bare wires just sticking out. I cut it again just in case that was the problem, and popped in another fuse and popped another one. The passenger side had been cut also, but there is still a short somewhere. I have a very strong feeling it's the visors because NOTHING else had been touched that day. I constantly have to push the visor up because it's droopy.

Isn't it funny how all SVX owners have exactly the same problems? It's because they build their cars so well that even the flaws are consistent in every product.

I would appreciate any help you guys could give on this. Is there any method for finding a short besides just checking every wire? I have a multi-meter just tell me what to do with it!!!

i had the exact same problem, only that sometimes i could get everything to come back on by toggling the spot light. i removed the overhead light/sunroof controls cluster, poked around (but found nothing shorted or suspicious), spayed a little contact cleaner on some of the switches, and put it back. after i replaced it, everything has been working fine. believe me, i know how annoying your problem is!!!!

No offence to any circuit city installers but it's like a fast food place there. Especialy with the comlexity of the svx radio housing I'd bet they mashed the deck back in the dash and shorted the dimmer wire. Good luck
