Question Key Codes

I recently bought a 92 SVX. It came with a remote for the aftermarket alarm/remote start and one key. I suspect it is a valet key, as it operates only the driver door and ignition. Are there any options for getting the other keys without buying all new locks? I pulled the trunk lock to look for a key code and could not find one. Does Subaru-USA keep a record tied to VIN numbers?

on some

They do keep the records of the key codes but only if it was entered properly at the time of sale. At least that's what I was told by my buddy who worked at a subie dealership near here.

my key has a 4 digit number stamped into it, then a 2 letter code below that. I always thought that a dealer could turn another one with that number...incorrect

That's exactly right. If the car was entered into the Subaru Star system properly when it was sold, then any subaru dealer should be able to cut a key from your vin. Go to your local subaru dealer and they should be able to help you out. About 90% of cars are entered properly.

Thanks. The local dealer said they didn't have it, but I I don't know if they were looking in their own records or the Subaru Star system. I might try another one. The one key I have is not the original, so there are no code numbers on it.
