Cool OT- The P-38 "The Lost Squadron"

I know a few of the members were interested in the P-38 they savaged from 300' down in the ice, when it made it's first flight since it's restoration back in Oct. last year....Well the History Channel's special on it will air tonight at 8:00 pm EST and again at midnight.

Thought some of you interested in old war planes might want to watch it.

I think I'll tape it, it flew for the first time on my oldest daughter's 14th birthday, and we were there, might even be in the special, in the crowd.

P-38

Its a really good show!!! I caught it a while back. Its amazing the amount of effort and money went into getting her to fly again.

You talking about "Glacier Girl"?? P38s are my favorite airplane. It's too bad almost none of them are in flyable condition. Here in WI, I know of ONE up at "Bong Airport" (named after Richard Bong, America's WW2 fighter pilot Ace, who flew a P38) that a bunch of old vets are restoring COSMETICALLY. Kinda annoying. If you're going to put work into it you might as well make it FLY, you know? I wouldn't just restore a car without it being able to drive.

The P-38 Lightning was an awsome plane. Twin super-charged Allison 16 cylinders pushing 1,150 hp. What the hell was that movie where they took the WW2 planes and outfitted them with rockets and stuff to go fight the Koreans or something?

I agree completely Rob,
Why have it if you're just going to look at it...
The P-38 IS a beautiful bird, I was really excited to be there when it took to the skies .....would have been cool if they loaded the machine guns with blanks.....strafing the crowd...he..he...of course would probably caused a few heartattacks that wouldn't have been cool...

So do you all see me in the crowd? ....If ya did, let me know where I was at, ...as I didn't see me

Here in NJ @ McGuire AFB there is a P-38 with a "pole up its @$$". Another words its on display in one of the Circles on base. The only interesting point is that it is still fully functional. Every year they take it down, start up the engines and run through all the systems. I however, dont believe that they have, or ever will fly it.

The planes name is "Pudgy" and Major Thomas B. McGuire was the pilot, hence the name of the base.

Hey, if you guys wanna see a pretty plane, pick up the latest issue of Air & Space. On the cover is the only replica of the Hughes H-1 racer. Howard Hughes himself flew the original to several world records and the replica is unbelievably gorgeous.

The article tells the story of people just drawn to the plane at shows, stepping past barriers just to touch it.

I'm not at all surprised. I'd wanna touch it, too.

One of the things

That drew me to this car in the first place was the fact that a pilot friend of my was driving one. Through my early research I found a high ratio of owners were pilots. Could you count off now. How many of you are pilots?

Well... if you want to get technical, the plane guys always called them 'turbo superchargers'.

However, to this day I still don't get that.
