shifting behavior...

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that my SVX is pretty darn quick off the line, but when coming out of slow, tight corners, the car seems to be in the wrong gear, and there is long lag as the tranny shifts into the appropriate gear when romping on the gas pedal upon exiting the corner. Am I going to kill the tranny if I manually downshift it myself before romping on the gas?

I put this in the tech forum.

I sometimes downshift when coming out of turns (when doing spirited driving) I dont know if its at all good for the car, but it makes it a lot more fun!

It's fine so long as you don't slam it into 3rd gear.

What I generally do is I will drop it to 3rd during spirited driving unless it's a long straight run then I'll push it up to 4th to allow it to shift into 4th. It's actually better for the AT to do that than to let it keep hunting back and forth.

Here some notes,

You can't shift to 1st gear(atleast I cant) when your rolling around 40mph
I've tried engaging power mode, and manually shifting the shifter to 1st, pressing the manuial button but no go.

from a standing stop to 40mph approximated
5k rpm at 1st gear
3k rpm at 2nd gear
2k rpm at 3rd gear
1.5 rpm at 4th gear

I usually put the shifter to 1st during auto crosses, and when i hit -40-30, im stick at 2nd gear the rest of the course

(overrev protection automatically switches me to second on the straights)

Yep, that's what I'm thinking, but I haven't really tried it yet. I'll have to see how it works this evening.

Mike, speaking of spirited driving, where did you mount your radar detector and where did you route the power cable for it? I'm thinking of mounting mine above the rearview mirror (after hacking a way a piece of the visor to make room) and running a power line out of the interior light array.

Manual button only works in 2 and 3, it's for winter starts.

@ 40 it won't let you go to 1st cause it might over-rev. Under WOT 2nd gear will hold to 82mph roughly.

Interesting. So, what happens? You just can't physically move the shifter into 1st gear position?

ok. I'm talking about 20-35 mph corners, so I'll have to experiment with downshifting to 2nd or 1st. Thanks. :-)

No, you can easily movie it into first position, but it wont downshift at all.

Paison - you mean it might flare past 7k rpm before it settles on 5k?

If you are going 31mph in second, third or fourth gear and romp on the gas pedal, you will shift to second second gear and slowly accelerate towards your desired speed. If you are going 30mph and slap that pedal down, the car will slam to first at somewhere around 4500-5000rpms and you'll enjoy a nice ride to the redline and about 40-46mph. I find that going up a hill, first gear is only good for about 40mph, but on a straight, I can pull 50mph before the car hits the rev limiter and bounces down to second. 80-82 seems to be about where second runs out. I never think it's a good idea to take my eyes off the road when I run third gear to the redline, but I'm assuming that it runs out at about 105..

Thanks for the tip.

To get into powermode/shift down with the svx, I do exactly what I did in that old arcade game "Cruising USA" to get a boost

Actually about 125mph or if you leave the shifter in 3rd it won't shift until 130mph.
