Re: [WANTED] Rear spoiler

I'm looking for one as well. How hard is it to drill the holes for proper installation? I'm worried it'd be easy to get crooked. Also do you need to take any rust proofing measures to keep the trunk from rusting from water getting in the drilled holes?

I would think it would just be a safer bet to buy the entire trunk assembly with spoiler. Seems like the safest route to go and if for whatever reason you want to go back to spoilerless then just swap trunks...

It is extremely easy. The underside of the trunk has reinforcements where the bolts for the spoiler go, which are square (ish?). Just drill into the middle of them and you're good to go.

Re: [WANTED] Rear spoiler

Sorry Pierre but I am going to semi-hijack your thread.

Does anyone have a US Polo Green spoiler in very good condition? Mine is getting pretty nasty and it may be cheaper to buy one than get it painted.

The paint on the spoilers is typically the first to go. They were actually painted and installed at the port in the US, and the paint is of substandard quality. You'll be hard pressed to find a spoiler with nice looking paint. When I bought my green 95 SVX, it was only about 4 or 5 years old at the time, and the spoiler's paint was already peeling.

The trunk lid is made from fiberglass. There is a rubber gasket that goes between the spoiler and the trunk lid as well.

In addition the mounting holes in the lid for the spoiler are outside the rubber seal where the lid meets the trunk opening.

Because the spoiler is an option... there are 4 small mounting points molded into the underside fiberglass trunk lid... so drilling is a no brainer.

Actually, there is no pre-formed gasket between the spoiler and the trunk lid. What is used is a thin strip of rope caulking. This is available at most body shops or parts stores.

Roll a thin strip between the palm of you hands, and completely surround the two mounting studs on the spoiler, pressing it lightly into place. When you bolt the spoiler in place, the rope caulk compresses and forms a waterproof seal.

Actually John they make a gasket for the spoiler. It's a thin foam strip that has a sticky side to place around the base of the spoiler. Ordered them when I painted my car.

This is true. The U.S. part number is 96054PA020...Protector R/sp...(part 3 in the diagram)

$26.00 for two strips plus shipping. There have to be cheaper alternatives.
