Any year will work, just as long as you get a matching 160 rear diff

The life of the gears is directly related to how you drive it!
Twenty years or twenty days...

Re: 5 speed swap

and one more thing, has anyone used a tranny with a cable clutch instead of a hydraulic one ? im asking all this because i think my 4.11 tranny is about to give up on me. while going 60 mph the transmission shifts up and down between 3rd and 4th.

Have you even READ my write up? (link in my Sig) I have always used cable set-ups, and have usually run a 5-speed out of a 1.8 Impreza....which is fine if you're going to drive it sanely....but NO manual will hold up to clutch dumps for very long.....but the occasional track day is fine, but learn to feed the clutch.

Re: 5 speed swap

I have used the Hunk set up on my car. (cabel clutch)
Very recommended.
And this are verry good set up. And also get good help form him.
Thanks alot.

But i have 2.2L tranny in my car. And this are 3.900. And the car is verry funny to drive whit. I only used my stock clutch. And this slip little if i shift fast.
But i must have a better clutch. And a tranny whit the Electonick speed sensor. So i can see how fast i going.

I used a 90 (wagon)legacy donor car. And this will not have the electronick speed sensor. So you must go for the secon leg or impreza (non turbo)
I should get a ''newer'' tranny. And i think i will go for one in 2.5L engine or 2.2L
Legacy tranny.

along with what else you do to it, any of those transmissions will handle the stock hp and torque, if you plan to increase power significantly you might consider looking into a WRX or even 2.5 RS tranny

Re: 5 speed swap

Just my .02 I have the 02 WRX 5mt with hydrolic clutch, it's crisp responsive and fun as hell to drive, I can even launch the sucker or run track days as well as mod the hell out of my SVX without worrying...(untill I build and turbo...and run 30lbs of boost... but thats a diff story)

Transmission choice should directly reflect your goals with the vehicle. Do some research... (incl. reading huck's instructions *very helpful to me btw*) find out what transmission fits your style of driving, your goals with the car, and ultimately your prefferance.

Don't let your budget deturmine your choice without extensively researching and looking for a transmission. WRX tranny's can be had with all their accessories for a reasonable price.

I specifically choose the WRX because I like where the power is, how it's distributed, and the fact that I could put a lot at it without worrying. When you look at the different 5mt's and 6mt's subaru has made over the years you will find that however similar they are on the outside, most vary quite a bit on the inside (gear ratio, thickness, etc.)

Alex,
The Speed sensor out of the SVX 4EAT will bolt onto the 5-speed you have in your car, and then you will have your Speedometer back ...just unscrew it from the SVX tranny, and screw it into the manual tanny where the speedometer cable goes.

This you mean?

But this will not fit the cabel hole in the 5MT tranny.
