Re: Can you use any year transmission

I found one in New Hampshire for $400.00, with 80k miles on it, but in "excellent condition". I just need to get it brought to Toronto, still trying to find out what year car it's from.

Re: Can you use any year transmission

Just in case you aren't aware I have very affordable rebuilt and upgraded transmissions. Last time I shipped one to canada freight was about $500.

Not to nitpick but just to avoid confusion to anyone who would see this, even though it would appear obvious, a FWD transmission can only be used in an AWD car if you choose you don't want AWD anymore.

Re: Can you use any year transmission

Actually you can bolt all the AWD parts and wiring into a FWD tranny to make it an AWD, but they run a different final drive ratio, so you'd also need to change out the rear diff...

Perhaps this would be a better way to go to avoid having to do this all over again in the near future. I know nothing about transmissions (except this is the 5th one between two SVX's), how would I choose which gear ratio to get? If you can explain the difference between each I'd appreciate it. This is now sounding like my best option.

Re: Can you use any year transmission

In talking to my son, he told me the 4.44 would make the car faster? Would I also have to change the rear diff? The tranny in NH is from a 92, think I'll pass on it as it will go very soon, my 92 went through 3 of them in 450,000km, it's now a 5 speed.

Re: Can you use any year transmission

If you get a transmission with anything other than the SVX OE 3.545 gear ratio you would have to get a rear differential set up with the matching gear ratio. I personally prefer the OE 3.545 gear ratio. When coupled with one of my performance transmisison control units (TCU) most people agree. The SVX doesn't really need a higher gear ratio to get better acceleration; it needs the better shift maps I put in the performance TCUs. The higher gear ratio is really only beneficial for drag racing.

In their stock form the non SVX transmissions have a couple clutch packs which are weaker than what's in the SVX transmission; however, when ordered from me the transmission will be upgraded to the same much stronger than original equipment setup no matter what the gear ratio.

My preference and my advice is to stay with the original 3.545 gear ratio and get a performance TCU to match.

The external speed sensor on the AWD transmissions also needs to have the wiring changed over...

Re: Can you use any year transmission

Probably should mention that you should avoid the JDM transmissions.
