FS: Newly Rebuilt Black Powder Coated SVX Calipers

I have a set of custom polished, newly rebuilt calipers for sale. The sand casting marks were removed with a flapper wheel with an 4" hand grinder, resulting in a ultra glossy black caliper finish. The pictures don't do them justice - it was dark and the flash washes out the color a bit. I'll try to take some in natural light later.
No contact from the member for whom I rebuilt these over a year ago so they're up for grabs to the general SVX public. The process I follow for my caliper rebuilds:

- Disassembly and inspection of all parts
- Ultrasonic hot tank soak to remove grease and grime
- Sandblast calipers to bare metal ( I outsource this to a sandblast company that uses new sand to prevent contamination of the surface and ensure proper bonding of powder coat). Reusing sand can embed grease and dirt into the surface which can cause improper powder coat adhesion akin to orangepeel
- Powder coat (I use a powder coating company - I don't do this myself). Current colors choices are limited to red (Chevy Corvette Victory Red), black, yellow, blue (Richard Petty blue - I hope no one ever picks this color) and silver which costs more because it is a 2-step process
- From the powder coater, run a tap through every threaded hole to clean out any powder coat and sandblasting residue and to ensure that all fasteners will go together easily. All pivot pin bores are cleaned to ensure proper slider operation
- Soapy water wash and run nylon brushes through all threaded holes and especially the caliper bores to ensure that there are no sand blast residues or metal shavings present
- The piston usually have some corrosion on the ID, so I clean them up as best as I can and paint the inside of the pistons with a Krylon rust inhibiting paint
- Reassembly using nothing but OEM Subaru rebuild kits and the supplied Subaru assembly grease
- Install new bleed screws with dust caps
- Synthetic caliper pin grease on all caliper pins

Here's a link to show what non-polished black powder coated calipers look like. The color in these pics is more representative of the natural light black color as well: http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=49569

Price: $300
Core Charge: $100 (you get this back when I receive your old calipers)
Shipping: depends on your location but the last few set cost around $20 with my Fedex discount

Re: FS: Newly Rebuilt Black Powder Coated SVX Calipers

Hey Gads,
I bet you have forgotten about me! You rebuilt my calipers a number of months ago.

No, I have not had the time to install the rebuilt calipers yet. I just don't know where the time has gone - and I'm supposed to be retired too!! Maybe this winter when it's too cold to get out and do yard work ...

I still get my calipers out from time to time to show people how "pretty" they are ..... Just gotta get busy on the ole '97 and get them mounted ....

If these you have for sale now aren't sold soon, I'm thinking about buying them for the ole '92 .....

Hope all is well ....

Harry

Re: FS: Newly Rebuilt Black Powder Coated SVX Calipers

No, I haven't forgotten - but I was beginning to wonder if you had installed them yet. I have yet to see what a black set looks like actually mounted on an SVX. I bet they's look great with SUBARU stickers to duplicate the look of the original STi 4 piston calipers.

Like these

or these - imagine black calipers with the SUBARU in contrasting white

When I get my next cores, I'm thinking of doing them in red again. I might even look into getting them cadmium plated. When you get them done, please take some pics and post them. As far as this set goes, if they're gone when you're needing more, I'll just do another set for you.

Gads,
Thanks.

BTW, do the "SUBARU" stickers withstand the heat generated by the calipers?

I've seen enough of them to think that they'd be OK for daily drivers. They probably won't not last long on a set that autocrossed or taken to track days alot. At the cost of less than $10, it's sure worth a try. Worst case, they come off or you take em off and clean the calipers back to new.

Gads,

Beautiful work! Wish I could rationalize spending $300 right now . Drop me a PM if you don't get a serious offer in the next 30 days.

Thanks.

That's actually a very fair price. Just check the prices for all 4 rebuilt calipers from any of the cheap auto stores. To bad these are not red.

I am actually about half way through doing my own. If I wasn't retired, I would be wasting money as its taking a lot of time.

Lee,
Don't get me wrong, I in no way meant to imply that $300 isn't a good price My comment was only meant to be a reflection of my current lack of disposable income

Re: FS: Newly Rebuilt Black Powder Coated SVX Calipers

Gads,

Received my rebuild and power coated calipers today, they look like they came from some German factory meaning like new. Great job thanks a lot.
Hopefully BTom will have a new source for rotors soon since Race Concepts seems to have disappeared.

Mike,

The price for unpolished calipers is $300.

The price for these polished calipers is normally higher (by $50) - I priced them lower this one time to move them (and help pay for Christmas goodies). Consider these polished black ones to be a Cyber Monday deal.

Sounds like a good deal to me, although I'm not quite ready. I will be consulting you once my motor is back in and my Ebony is back up and running.
