Starting problem

Ok, so "christine" aka "the teal" will not start. I was on my way to pick up my Ebony yesterday from getting a transmission swap and when I stopped at a gas station and tried to start it, it started but made a little "pop" sound and died and would not start back up.

It has been having a problem where it would crank for a little too long before starting and once in a while it would run rough and I would have to give it gas so it would not stall. Once it was started though all was fine. There where no codes or anything and it would usually start back up pretty quickly the next time I tried to start it unless I left it sit for more than an hour.

Now however, it has a code 11, 34 and 37. It cranks, just will not fire up. I swapped the crank angle sensor which was giving the code 11 out of my polo and when I did that the car started up. In fact I started it a few times. Then it started and died again, once again making what kinda sounded like a "pop" and would not start.

For the heck of it, I put the sensor that I took out of my teal and put it in the polo to see if it was "bad" and the Polo will start right up. No codes.

So I am guessing that the sensor may not actually be the problem???

Re: Starting problem

Ok, so after reading the link Tom posted, I went outside and was going to try unplugging the MAF and starting the car, but I decided to try starting it first. The car started right up. But The power light is blinking 16 times as soon as the car starts up. It is also doing this during the time when the car will not start.

Is it safe to say that it won't start when its warmed??

We need you to pull the AT codes too... Also, next time it doesn't start... disconnect the battery for 30mins... try again

Re: Starting problem

No, the car sat for over 14 hours yesterday before I got home and it would not start at that time. I also tried again this morning before swapping that sensor and it would not start.

How do I pull the AT codes?

Re: Starting problem

svx-iw.com has all of the code information.

This is odd, I would be interested to see why the AT is throwing codes

Re: Starting problem

That website is not coming up for me.

Now the car seems to be starting up, not always smoothly. The check engine light is solid now when it starts good. When it starts "bad" or doesn't start the check engine light is not on. And the power light is still blinking no matter what.

Also, when I turned it off the last time, it sounded like something was still turning after it shut off, but the noise was coming from the rear end?? I'm going to try to get a video of the sound its making.

Video of it starting up without check engine light:

Re: Starting problem

Sound coming from the rear end is most likely the fuel pump (the tank is under the back seat).

I found how to check the codes for the check engine light there... but not the other?

The sound is kinda hard to describe and I can't get it to pick up on my camera's mic to pick it up over the exhaust noise. I am guessing it might be coming from around there. The fuel pump was replaced a while ago.

Not saying it needs to be replaced, just saying that the noise is probably the fuel pump running.

Re: Starting problem

I'm not sure what your problem is, but I wouldn't be too concerned with the Power light flashing. When I've had problems starting the SVX and the Legacy I've gotten the Power light (AT TEMP on Legacy) to flash falsely.

Re: Starting problem

Thank you. Reading owns me.

It only had one code in the TCU, code 25. Which is "Engine torque control signal". What is that??

Re: Starting problem

I decided to drive the car since it seems to be starting now. I took it out for a short trip first, all seemed fine until I came back home then it took a lot to get it started again. I waited an hour or so, went back out and it started right up. I drove it on a couple errands, with the intentions of never turning it off until I came home. A couple times when accellerating it really hesitated, when I pressed the gas pedal down it did not take off and go, it just kind of ever so slowly gained speed, pressing the gas down harder did nothing at all, did not increase the rpm's or anything, then all of a sudden it would realize I wanted it to go faster and take off.

Could this be a MAF problem??? Could the MAF cause it to get codes and not start and have weird hesitations like this?
