Engine RPMs - Converter not locking up?

What RPMs should the engine be turning at various speeds? I just had the transmission rebuilt on my 92 and at 70 mph it's turning 2500. That seems high to me. I would think it should be around 2000 if the torque converter clutch is engaged. Mine's turning that at 40.

How can I tell if the torque converter is locking up or the trans is slipping?

That seems right. A little low actually. I turn 3500-4000 at 85mph.

If you hit the gas, and nothing happens, your transmission is slipping.

When gently accelerating from zero to freeway speed, you should feel a total of four 'shifts' and corresponding drops in revs. The last is actually the torque converter locking.

I don't remember what revs you should be turning at 70, but if the car is warmed up and has been traveling at a pretty steady speed for awhile, the converter should definitely lock up.

Dab the throttle a little and release it. If the engine revs independent from vehicle speed, then the converter isn't locked. Of course, if you give it too much the car will just unlock the converter anyway - but then you can see the drop in revs when it locks again.

If the engine speed is locked to vehicle speed (the same way a car with a manual is when it's in gear), then the converter is locked.

2000-2500 @ 70 MPH seems about right to me. At 3000 I'm generally showing a tick over 80. It's no secret when my teal reaches TC operating temp because it lugs the engine a bit at low speeds when it hooks up. The silver, I barely notice.

With the car fully warmed, get on a freeway and set the cruise. If the tach reading varies with engine load, I'd say something's up.

Both of my svx's have always been at 2,000 rpm at 60mph and 3,000 rpm at 90mph with the stock transmission gearing and torque converter locked.

I'm gonna check this out as soon as i get a chance. At lower speeds on the back roads (around 45) the lockup is noticeable but on the highway it does'nt seem as apparent.

I think you have 3.90's in that FWD model though. The AWD has 3.55's and should be turning an even 4k at 120

lol, not just awd - but 92's and AWD are the fastest!

But in all seriousness - the fwd stock should whip any stock awd in a straight line provided it has the tires to put it to the ground. You have better gearing and less weight.

oops - sorry for the threadjack

Significant Technical Input Registered SVX Classic SVX
With a properly functioning transmission, with stock 3.545 gearing, with the torque converter locked up in 4th gear, the tach should read 2750rpm at 80mph.

If you let off the gas, the tach should not drop. If you coast to a lower speed, the tach should drop slowly as well.

If you are in 4th gear and the tranny temperature has not reached high enough to lock up the converter, when you let off the gas, the tach will drop rapidly. Driving steadily in 4th, when the TC locks up, you will see the tach drop slightly and stay there.
