From what I understand, it's probably not a job you'd want to tackle unless you know what you're doing. A search of the topic could keep you reading the rest of the day. Good luck.

Search?

Do it with a hubster/hub tamer/subaru sst or I wouldn't reccomend doing it yourself. I preach about this at least once a month.

why not do this myself? Everyone says that I should take it to a dealership but no good reasons why.

The dealer has the tools to replace the bearings without removing the hub assembly and saving you time. If you do it yourself, you will need lots of time and the proper tools. I changed them once and it took me a long time because I broke a bolt, and parts are not easily available. I also tried replacing the whole hub assembly rather than pressing in new bearings. Either way, I found that it was cheaper to go to the dealer because of the time involved. Good luck.

I was just going to replace the whole assembly because I think that the guy who had it before me may have damaged it while trying it himself. What kind of tools will I need to do this? Thanks. I hate to keep asking questions but the dealership told me at least $300 to $400 for this.

I would take it to a regular mechanic. My mechanic charged me $60 to do a rear wheel bearing on my old Legacy (I provided the parts). I don't believe this garbage about not pressing in bearings or not taking off the hub. You don't need a hub tamer.

Thanks but like I said before, I fix just about everything that breaks. And there is a lot of it with my old truck Mustang etc. No one seems to be able to tell me what all is involved and what if any special tools I need to do this. Does anyone know what is so hard about this? It can't be that bad LOL! As I said, I have rebuilt engines, trannys, set the gears in the rear end of my car and all that kinda happy stuff. Just doesnt seem resonable to get ripped buy a mechanic when Its somethingI can do.

Again, wheel bearing replacement is probably one of the most frequently discussed (and debated) topics on this forum. If you want to gauge the prevailing wisdom, search the topic, have a good read, then draw your own conclusions.

You can tackle this job yourself, BUT, if you don't do it EXACTLY right, you'll be doing it again very soon.
