Exclamation Computer/Server & Network hardware needed

The SVXWN is in the process of getting ready for a huge upgrade. The A/C is working well and I would like to thank all that helped to make that happen last year. Now we need to look at a serious aging server that uses ram that is no longer manufactured and is very expensive. It does not help that our nearly 6 years worth of posts and data have caused the database to grow to just under 4 gigs of data!

So, before we start a donation drive to buy new and used gear off Ebay, I figured I would post here a list of gear we are looking at and see if some members here have closets to clean out.
  • 19 inch rack mount servers. The smaller the better. 1U and 2U are preferred, but larger ones considered based upon specs.
  • 19 inch rack mount switches. 100 meg minimum Cisco preferred but not required. Managed is also preferred.
  • 19 inch rack mount router. Cisco also preferred here.
  • SCA 80 pin hot swap hard drives
  • 68 pin ultra SCSI hard drives
  • SATA/SATA II hard drives
  • RAM (we currently use PC100 ECC Registered, can be PC133 as well) DDR/DDR2 also accepted if we get/buy new servers that use it.

If you have any of gear of this or similar nature, post it in this thread or PM me. Let me know what it is and if you would be willing to donate it (with obvious recognition) or sell it to us at a discounted rate.

Also if someone here has low latency bandwidth (preferred multi-homed) that is server quality and they would not mind donating some space, our future growth goals include load balanced web servers and database servers at a second location. We already have the Cisco/Arrowpoint gear to accomplish this. The set up (once all done and bugs worked out) will just about guarantee no down time. We have tried our best in the past and we hope that the service has been seen as mostly stable, this is the next step.

This post surely provides confirmation of huge effort, past present and future, which must be acknowledged and provides a positive way in which to do so. Chris must not be disappointed. This is serious stuff.

Amen brother.

This site has been down very little since inception, a tribute to the skill and workrate and generosity of the back-room boys.

Make sure you get a donation site set up, so equipment can be bought if not donated.

That looks cool Green, and does seem to have some speed!

Here is the one we are going to get.

Chris says it will be much faster than present. Also, it is expandable. It comes with two blades [or servers], and can expand up to six.

Your Apple one comes with one, plus expansion for two more. The way I see it, and I am not IT infrastructure savvy, it means we can easily upgrade the Network as required.

Chris has done us proud.

Joe

Looks like a very nice piece of kit. We use a lot of Dell Poweredge servers at work for developing VOIP telephony service provisioning software.

I have a spare cisco router I could donate, but it's rather old and might be downgrade rather than an upgrade.

Still looking for equipment?

Hey Chris,
Are you still looking for hardware, or have you already started your shopping?

The company I was working for shut down at the end of February. In the next couple of weeks the CEO is going to pull the plug on the servers (a pair of Dell 1U rackmount boxes). I don't have the specs (I've asked and am still waiting for an answer), but they are very modern.

I might be able to get them at a good price, especially if we can save the CEO from having to ship them home to his city (which he will do if he can't sell them immediately).

There is probably some other network gear -- switches, router, ???. If you're still interested, I'll query again for the specifics.

We purchased one, but it would be good to know how much the servers would be. We still may be in the market for some equipment. Thanks

This past Monday I e-mailed information to Chris T. (also CC'd to Earl). I requested an ACK and that you tell me whether you were interested at all, but haven't heard anything back.

RSVX Chris- If you'd like to see copies I'll be happy to e-mail them to you too. Just send me your e-mail address.

I have some more information on the pricing, if you are interested. If not please let me know, as I have plenty of other things I can spend my time on.
