96 driveshaft fits 92 car?

So, following on from the gbox, the nearside driveshaft has had it in a big way. I've got a 96 driveshaft assuming that it fits a 92. I am right, aren't I??!!

Do you mean the driveshaft or the axleshafts?

Part numbers

Tony

I expect they will be the same.

Go to Subaruparts.com, and compare the parts number for the axle in a 92 and then a 96. They will probably be the same parts number.

92 and 93 have the same part number from each axle half, but this changes for 94 on!! There is insufficient detail to say what the parts are that have changed, but I assume it was to the cv joint and not the ends that fit into the hub/diff.....

Lightbulb The penny drops

Tony

There were changes made to the gearbox during the lifecycle. The housing was made bigger at one stage to accommodate a larger forward sprag element, whatever the heck that is. This may mean the gearbox is slightly changed from '94, but the shafts may still be the same size and fit. Hard to say.

You could try ringing an expert. One of the US places is DRW transmissions, Donald Wang is the boss, and supposed to be very knowledgeable on SVXs. Tel 619-258-4240. They are in California, so a lot of time zones away.

Nearer at home, get the telephone number of the Subaru transmission rebuilders in Glasgow from your local Subie dealer. I rang them once, and found them friendly and helpful. Can't remember the name of the business off-hand though. Anybody know?

Joe

Sorry for stating the obvious, but if you have both driveshafts in your possession then why not just examine them and see if you can spot the difference?

The 96 is still en route at the moment, so just a bit of checking out before the garage is let loose on it!

Actually, the spare gearbox that I had in temporarily was a later type, so I don't think that there will be a problem, but the way my luck with the car has been going recently.....

I've used '92 axles on a 94 tranny.

That's a measure of comfort, so thanks for that.

The garage should be fitting it today, so not much longer to wait....

Thanks Huck,

I will rest easily tonight as they haven't even started to do the job yet!!

If it isn't done soon, I'm going to take the car back and do it myself - it doesn't look like a major or difficult task.

It's really not a hard job...the hardest part is getting the big nut off the Axle.

just make sure you have the right size punch to knock the pin out...

Oh no it doesn't...

My garage rang today to say that the outer shaft where it goes into the hub is a larger diameter!

Back to square one.....

Question

Well, can you just buy the '96 hub, and use that?
