I think this is a great way to go instead of getting a rebuilt tranny from Subaru or anyone else. I can't use a manual tranny in my commuting. There are some days when my left leg would just die.

So I am just checking again. Does the drive shaft or tranny mount have to change? Any extra pieces to add in?

No. Only change is to swap the rear gears and carrier, and the speedo sensor - the tranny is a pure bolt up (assuming you use the SVX torque converter).

Currently my rear transfer clutch is gone so I only have FWD but the trans shifts fine.

You think I should get the TC rebuilt/flushed?

What's involved with changing the torque converter? Dosen't the transmission have to come apart to swap over the TC?

Tim,

If you have the ready cash I would get it checked/flushed/rebuilt for piece of mind. With less cash available, I'd drive it a few miles then re-drain & change the filter again - why, because if a clutch has failed, that clutch material has to be somewhere - probably not much in the TC, but since the swap is such a pain, a few more minutes and another filter is chump change (IMHO).

svx_commuter, the transaxle has to be pulled, but not separated. The TC sits between the engine and the differential. There is a hollow tube (I forget its real name) that passes through the differential, and which couples the TC to the tranny input shaft.

Are you saying that the Impreza TC just slides out off the tranny shaft and the SVX TC just slides right on? I assume there are some splines or something to line up. No o-rings or seal to change or damage?

change the front seal on the trans when u do the swap. yes they just slide out and the new one just slides on. All of the 4eat in that version have the same spline and input shafts

You'll need a rear diff from a 4.11 Legacy though - the ones from the Impreza are tiny and won't match up to our axles or accomodate the limited-slip hub.

91 Legacy is okay?
