HELP removing ignition switch cylinder

I'm having trouble with my ignition switch - it will no longer turn to the "Lock" position, and I'm able to pull the key out in any position (actually, sometimes it falls out while driving!).

I've never removed a switch cylinder before. I saw mention of some "pin" that needs to be pressed while the key is in the ignition, turned to "ACC", but i'm not sure where this pin is.

I tried ti remove the steering collar. I wasn't able to remove the back bottom piece, which actually surrounds the ignition switch. Is there some other peice that needs to be removed, like the lower dashboard? I can see the switch, since the tp piece is off, but i'm not sure how I would get the whole thing out without removing the lower piece.

Any help would be great - I really don't know what i'm doing...
Thanks

I have one of those too. It will not always allow me to start the car either. I went to a lock smith and talked to him about it. He said it was one of the hardest cylinders to change and it would take him about an hour to change it out. I have seen them exposed, and still don't understand how to get them out. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Maybe?

I know a little about getting it out and will know more in the next couple of days. I will try to take some pics. Actually I know how to get the cylinder out if the entire switch assembly is out, but I might learn how to do it from full installation. I will post if I learn something.

You will have to remove the lower dash covering, then you can remove the lower plastic collar, after which, you'll need to remove the metal cover over the bottom of the column. After that's all done, you'd better hope that the two security bolts that hold the ignition switch to the column are already loose. If not, then you're going to have to find a way to back them out, and that's not easy because they don't have heads on them, hence the "security". If you get this far, then rest should be a cinch. BTW, replace those security bolts with appropriate sized allen head bolts for easier removal in case you have to go back in. If they really want to steal your SVX, those bolts aren't going to slow them down anyway.

Very good advice, My cylinder was loose, the security screws were only holding by a thread or two and I spent about an hour on my back trying to slowly turn the recessed headless screws back in place. After I had them tight, I realized what an idiot I was

Cylinder Only

As I understand it, you want to remove ONLY the key cylinder and not the entire ignition switch. You can do this, but you still need to get access to it as described above. The enclosed pics will show you what to look for on the switch.

The first picture shows the entire ignition switch removed from the steering column. The removal "pin" that you are looking for is under the wires and plastic band holding the wires.

The second picture shows the wires pulled aside to reveal the little brass colored pin. That is the pin the you press to release the lock cylinder only.

Hope this helps.

Bolts

The bolts with "twist off" heads that hold the ignition switch can be bought from "subaruparts.com" if you have to take the complete ignition assembly off.

Instructions--I think

1: Remove the dash cover. If you don't know there are 2 small bolts that hold it on. One is behind the mirror switch so you have to remove it. The other is behind the coin holder (92-94) and then some clips.

2: Remove the cover plate under the dash cover.

3: Unscrew plastic shields that surround the steering column and ignition switch. You will only be able to remove 2 of them until after the next step.

4: Remove the 2 nuts (12mm) that hold the steering column to the dash. This will give you a little room and then you can remove the other plastic cover.

At this point you can actually get to the "pin" that holds the key cylinder in place. I would recommend using the short "L" end of a small Allen wrench to depress the brass pin to pull the cylinder out. Depress it with the key inserted in the cylinder and rotate until you feel the position that it will pull out. I will check again to see if I can determine the exact position.

Hope this is not too confusing.
