Instrument cluster needle (fuel gauge)

So I did a search and I did not find an answer to my question prior to asking so here goes...

I got a set of the white instrument cluster gauges and I put them in the other day and wired them up. Everything works fine on the gauges but when I pulled the needles off in order to put the white gauges on I made note of where they were and put them back in the same position, however when I actually started the car to test the gauges the needles were all in the wrong position, example it showed I was going 40 miles an hour in park. So with the vehicle running I pulled the needles back off and position them correctly, temperature needle rpm needle miles per hour needle and fuel gauge needle. All of the needles are now reading correct except the fuel gauge is very erratic. I put it on full and it will go to empty or three quarters of a tank or sometime is way past full I can't get it to read correctly. Any ideas?
