As for the camera, you do definitely get what you pay for...until you start looking at whatever the latest hot feature is. Right now, HDD camcorders are stupid expensive for no good reason. You can't tell me that fitting a HDD is more expensive than fitting a DVD drive or a tape transport. Both of those are complicated mechanical things that have to be built into and around a camera. The HDD is already packaged, in its own box.

I recently bought a relatively inexpensive MiniDV camcorder, the Elura 100. It's small, light, and takes external video and audio inputs. It'll mount nicely in the car and allow me to use external 'bullet' cams. I think I paid about $320 or $340 - not a huge leap over the one you're not happy with.

In my opinion, trying to buy a camera that does stills and video is pointless. It will do one or the other, or neither, well.

If the mic could pick up some damn sound I wouldn't feel ripped off. I got it for $120 plus some shipping. I'm not quite dumb enough to pay 200 for something like this.

You are probably right. Both of my mom's still only cameras have awesome pic quality. What a huge hassle though to lug around PAS and a camcorder.

Does it have a mic jack? A $10 mic from Wally World might help you out in the sound department.

Nope. No options other than to turn it on and off. :/
