Any Honda people?? Tech Q's

I have a buddy who dropped a rod on his 99 civic the other day. He always bragged that he never had to change his oil because Hondas last forever... well needless to say he learned his lesson. Now he wants me to drop a new engine in the car because rebuilding a honda engine is pointless and he prob. cracked the block as well. SO... I need to find a replacement but I know nothing about the car or it's engine. What size?? What years will match up?? I just need some basic info on the engine which I "think" is a 1.6 single OHC. The car's credentials are as follows

1999- year
Model- civic
sub model- EX
Trans- auto

thats about all I know and I am waiting on the VIN number from him as I cannot go look at the car as of now. Thanks for your help guys

Tom

You're correct, Tom.

The '99 Civic had the 1.6L (1590cc) single OHC inline 4 cylinder engine. Horsespower for the EX was about 127hp, surpassed only by the Civic Si (160hp)

I believe the engine was the same from 1996-1999.

Tom,

You can drop almost any Honda engine into the car (K20, B18, B16, etc.) This is why there are so many Hondas Civics in SM class -- they've pulled engines out of Integras and dropped them into their Civics Your primary concern should be that the engine harnesses match up. The mechanical part should be a breeze....
You might want to check out the Hasport Performance folk's web site, they have kits for just about any Honda swap you can imagine (they stuffed a 2.2 liter H22A out of a Prelude into a CRX a while back....)

Civic motor

Tom,
Those motors are 3x as easy to swap as our motors. I fragged the motor in my 98 civic when I sucked in some small parts of flashing out of a new intake tube. Don't ask...anyway the motor and tranny swap was cheap and easy when compared to the SVX swap. Steve

Is he looking for more power, or just to get it up and running. The easiest would be to get D16 replacement for it, then a B16 from an Si (mine isn't for sale ) which would also require the ECU. Not sure if he deserves an engine upgrade, though, since he refused to change his oil. The Integra (B18's) and RSX (K20's) engines could be swapped in with out extreme trouble, but wouldn't be worth it if he isn't looking to get into moddifying on a rather serious level.

Now if I could only figure out my Civic's power delivery problem.

All right!!! Something I can help with (btw guys, I know everything that is NOT subaru, so let me know if you need any help).

Short answer: Any B series motor will work. If it's vtec, then any year with vtec and sohc will fit. If he wants an upgrade (like a b18 or something from an integra, or the dohc vtec), then he'll need the engine and the ecu, the harness is the same for all of them. He can also use the same tach if he swaps anything out (since it's auto), but if he wants it for looks, then the factory tachs from the respective cluster will fit. I honestly, don't know of anything more straightforward than a honda motor swap. Oh, and F%&$ the K20. I dunno why you guys would want to put him through that swap, especially if the car is just for commuting.

He isn't a car guy like me. He just wants something that goes and I guess he has formed an attachment to this pile of junk. So a new standard 1.6 it is. Now I gotta find one. Thanks guys

That was my point in saying the K20 wouldn't be worth the hassle.

A used D16 should be pretty easy to find at a junk yard (or even eBay) and they are pretty cheap as far as an engine goes.

i guess you could say i know my way around a Honda this is our latest creation.10.71 on 93 octane....yea there is no cage so no there was not a better pass lol.

Note the traction bar setup and 4 inch down pipe

pheonix tech T67, custom top mount turbo manifold out of T04-e(based on the design of the full-race topmount admittingly) sleeved b20(2.0L CRV block and 1.8 GSR vtech head),9.1: forged pistons, rods, cams, built heads, you name it. those runs were on low boost(23 psi) and it spins about 420hp on 23. Will be moving up to 30lbs on 104 here pretty soon, should be well over 500whp(and nines) Dont worry cage is in the works

<pride hijack/>
should be 2-350 bux and its easier to drop the motor away from the car if you can get access to a lift. Do not attempt a valve adjustment on a single cam vtech if you go that route(EX model engine) as its a pita to improve and you usually end up making it worse.

You wouldn't want that engine, Tom. The VIN should be something starting with "1HG EJ6" (or EJ8). Simply for ease, you'd want a D16Y7 engine if the VIN says EJ6, and a D16Y8 if it's EJ8. You won't need to modify any sensors, etc.

back when I was a stupid ricer I blew up my stock engine with zex. I bought a d16 with tranny for $150 at the local junkyard and it only took two days to swap it in, not even hardly knowing what to do. Those cars are built like legos, even a 5 year old could do it. As long as you get a 96-00 engine with matching ECU (if you get a d16 vtec engine you'll need a d16 vtec ecu, same goes with manual or auto tranny) you won't have any problems at all. If he buys the same engine as before he won't need a new ecu. Just make sure you have an engine lift.. or better yet, join clubsi.com or one of the other bazillion honda boards and look for someone to do it for you.
