I got your pm.... No ... I'm sorry!!! Iwas merely agreeing with you!!!

You hit the nail on the head.

I've told this story before... but with the tone being what it is now on the site... I'll try again

This happened when I was 19 and reporting aboard my first submarine. I had been on board for only 2 or 3 days and came upon a heated discussion in the crews mess (dinning room) I had just walked up and heard something that I didn't agree with... so I chimmed in... A big burly torpedo man clocked me right in the face and put me on my ass in the middle of the deck! Shaking my head I got up, and an even older and bigger chief escorted me to the side of the mess area. He said... " Seaman Hansen, there's an unwritten rule here on the Nautilus..., You must listen to a conversation for at least 15 minutes before you chime in..." " Now petty officer Jackson there probably agrees with what you said.... , you just didn't follow the rules..."

Now don't think that I would encourage anyone to hit or attack someone here for chiming in a little quickly... it's just a fable as to how to avoid stepping on someone toes....

Too much for anyone?? sorry

It's a good story, I have heard it before. Keep in mind that there had been 4 1/2 - 5 days of posts (plus the pages of arguing on the other thread) before I chimed in, and that most of the post-ers were relative old-farts, not newbies.

I don't mind getting decked once in a while. Actually, I have come to expect it because my mouth won't stay shut. I'd rather get decked than be mute.

The original poster on this thread was expressing frustration at the high level of silliness on the forums of late. I don't have the history to compare, but I can see that his frustration was well warranted, and unfortunately, in his very own thread.

So....what to do about it?

Based on an outside the forum e-mail exchange, I believe you could say Beav "got a life" in contrast to the sad individual that's posting this response. He still cruises from time to time, I saw a tech input a couple of weeks ago.

i will also volunteer to donkey-punch anyone who doesn't follow the agreed upon forum rules.

Unca has a point there - too many people read the last post in a thread and reply, without reading the entire thread. many explanations, clarifications, and arguments later, the thread may or may not get back to the original subject.... i'd encourage reading an entire thread before throwing in your two cents.

Trevor also has some good suggestions - especially the "pleases and thank-you's." i always try to remember to thank a poster who takes the time to answer my question. there's been a couple times on here where i've taken to time to go look something up in my owners manual/Chilton book/Internet/etc. and type up a lengthy post, only to get no response in return. i'm not looking for a bouquet of flowers, but a simple 'thanks' would be nice. makes you think twice about helping out next time.

oh yeah - stick around, Trevor - this place is just going through a growth spurt. i've seen it before - things will settle.

As a moderator, I don't feel that I should be big brother and censor everything I don't agree with or every little bit of launguage (even though I don't like trash talk, or pottie mouth). I have had my eyes opened a little bit more and will try to do what I can in keeping this site the way it was. I miss it.

I am a pessimistic optimistic. I think the worst is going to happen, that way when it does, i don't feel as bad, but if the best happens, i am twice as happy.

???

so what is the standing topic of this thread?

it was supposed to be 'goodbye to/from trevor', but it turned into a 'this is what you should do who and where you should be and why' waste of time.

just say good-bye and wish him good luck in the future with out us. if we all act like congress than nothing will get done.

nothing you say can sway anyone to think different and theres a 99% chance they already know. the horse is decayed and the stick broke a long time ago.
