Stupid question about oil level

Last time I changed my oil, I put 6.3 quarts in and it was halfway between the two holes (L and F) on the dipstick. When I changed my oil this time and put 6 quarts in and it's halfway between the hole marked F and the little slit right above it.

Question is this: Does the oil level need to be at the slit or at the hole marked F? I hope it's not the hole because I'll have to drain some out.

Thanks.

Have you run the car yet? The level may go back to normal after the oil filter is filled. Filling to the little slit will not hurt the engine

did you check, warm, cold, or in-between. I have never looked at the manual, but I always assumed the difference between the F and the slit was cold to hot.

Dunno about that. But I started it and let it run for a minute. Then I rechecked it and it was right at low. I added another .3 quarts and now it's right at the hole marked F. Perhaps it will raise as high as the slit when warm.

It takes some oil to fill the filter as well. That may make some difference as well.

NOT a stupid question in any shape or form.

I have always wondered the exact and valid reason for the slit as well as holes in respect of the SVX and also a previous car I had but and have never been able to get a properly confirmed verbal answer. As result of your post I have checked the OEM manuals I have and the only reference to the slit indicates this is a reference for when the engine is hot. Quote : -

" Just after driving or when the engine is warm, the oil level may be in the range between the ' F ' and the ' notch ' mark as a result of thermal expansion. "

One would therefore reason that a reading in any way above the notch when hot, indicates a level which is too high.

When my wife has purchased petrol (gas) on several occasions the attendant has insisted oil was required due to taking the slit as a full reference point and in effect over filled the sump, but I have assumed not so high as to be a problem due to the engine being hot at the time. This is no doubt a common error.

A " How to read the engine dip stick " in the file now being extended would not be at all silly even though it may at first appear so and I will work something out as there must be others in doubt. Or am I being silly ?

Wink

So...as a result of reading this thread, I just went out to the garage & checked the oil level. The car has been sitting since Friday. I had the oil/filter changed two weeks ago, & always add 6 quarts of Mobile 1, as .3 of a quart won't be missed IMHO.
The level was at hole #2 exactly.
Last week I pulled the dip stick of another '92 SVX & it was the first one I'd seen with an "E" & "F" marked at the holes. (Time for a poll)? I, too, wondered about the notch. I always thought it wasn't oil expansion, that created the higher than normal reading when hot, but just the fact that oil was "slopped" around on the stick, & that one should wait about 5 minutes for the oil to completely drain down into the crankcase for an accurate reading.

Ron.

I have sent an email to Earl with the following text for possible inclusion in the "How to" locker as this should be of value.
--------------------

ENGINE OIL LEVEL AND DIP STICK MARKINGS.

The engine dip stick markings can be rather confusing particularly as in some cases there is no lettering indicating full and empty and there is a notch as well as two holes as level marks. The hole nearest the end of the stick indicates LOW LEVEL and the hole further up FULL.

The Subaru workshop manuals include the following information. Quote : -

a. Before checking the oil level make sure the engine is cold.

b. Do not check the oil level immediately after the engine is stopped; wait
at least 10 minutes.

c. Immediately after driving or when the engine is warm, the oil level may
be in the range between the ' F ' and the ' NOTCH ' mark as a result of
thermal expansion of the oil.

d. To prevent overfilling the engine with oil, do not add oil above the full
mark when the engine is cold.

Engine oil capacity as per manual : -

Upper level, 6 litres. 6.3 U.S. qts. 5.3 Imp. qts.

Lower level, 5 litres. 5.3 U.S. qts. 4.4 Imp. qts.
-------------------------

Hi Ron,

Howsat; now you have the real oil to add to your box of fluids !
P.S. Where is your full mark
