How many MPG have people gained from going manual?

I know the trannies are more efficient but how much more? I am currently getting about 23 MPG on average with about 75% highway driving. On straight highway I am getting about 30 MPG. I'm wonder how much higher it could go, assuming the car was in as good running condition as mine is.

Re: How many MPG have people gained from going manual?

I lost a few highway MPG for sure, due to the very low gearing. The answer to this question is entirely dependent upon the gearing of the trans. With the EG33, because of how wonderfully much low-end torque it makes, you can get away with really high 5th gearing (I assume you're uninterested in 6-spd $$), and you should get very good highway mpg, with nice, low, quiet cruising RPM. For city MPG, it depends a lot on the driving habits/style of the driver. Using my 6-speed SVX, my brother and I have gotten very different city MPG.

Re: How many MPG have people gained from going manual?

My highway mileage dropped a fair chunk after installing my 6-speed. However, I blew a fuel line shortly after that, so I may have been leaking into nowhere and just appeared to have garbage mileage. The jury is out. With the 4EAT I was consistently in the 27-30 MPG range on the highway and ~21 in town when not driving like a tool.

Re: How many MPG have people gained from going manual?

I get 20-21 unless I'm on the highway, then I get almost 28. That could also be due to my exhaust, it's a 2" to a 3" catback.

Gonna switch it to a 2.25" secondary to 3" header-back. With a little luck I'll gain top end and some mpgs

Your final drive of 3.9 isn't THAT bad. What is your 6th gear ratio?

Re: How many MPG have people gained from going manual?

I am happy with mine. I was more concerned with the SPG ( SMILES PER GALLON)
My in town was in the mid 12. Small town tons of lights. Lucky if I get out of 3rd. I get 15 now. Highway is about 27 again not flat terrain. Oh and I love the sound of the exhaust

Yea, it's not the final drive, it's the 6th gear, .842.

US spec models:

02-05 WRX 5 speed: .738
Final drive: 3.9

06-07 WRX 5 speed: .738
Final drive: 3.7

08+ WRX 5 speed: .780
Final drive 3.9

04+ STI 6 speed: .756
Final drive: 3.9

07 Legacy Spec B 6 speed: .707
Final drive: 3.54

I combined a 06 STI 6 speed with the 5-6 cluster gear from a Legacy Spec B. I get the .707 with a 3.9 final drive. 53 at 2000 rpm on up to 77 I think at 3000.

Re: How many MPG have people gained from going manual?

Even with my shoddy engine, leaking exhaust and code yellow 4EAT VTD I get around 31 on highway.

The last trip in Denmark this summer, 2 adults 2 kids, vacation loaded and zero topographic drama, saw speeds of 84 mph in average (typically between 75 and 95) with this mileage.

Commute is bendy B-roads, mountain pass, some highway and city jam is more like 24-25 mph . I step a lot on it during the ~25 km "scenic" part. Like climbing the pass at WOT and stuff like that.

FD is 3.7

Lucky. With my sliptastic 4EAT I'm lucky to get 24 mpg highway...
