Exclamation I need HELP!!!!

I bought my car about a month ago. When I bought it I knew about the check engine light being on and the previous owner had taken it to a place (Import Motors) owned by a Subaru master tech, and an owner of an SVX, and had it checked out. They said it was the EGR solenoid valve and they would fix it for $377. I (thinking I was a smart consumer) went shopping around and found that the local Subaru dealer would do it for $236. So I took it in got it fixed and was driving my car the same day I got it back and the check engine light comes on again. I don't really trust myself with the wire diagnostic because I'm not that knowledgable about it. I was wondering if anyone could either give me a step by step with pictures or tell me if its possible that because both the previous owner and I both dealt with the first store if there is any way to get them to do another diagnostic of it without me having to pay them like the previous owner did. Thank you for any input.

Question

So after the light came back on, did you not take the car back to the dealer?

Ron.

Uhhh...Ditto........

Did they not do a diagnostics run to confirm that was what needed fixing? Are you worried they are gonna say "hey, we replaced what you told us and that's all we did"?????

Sorta... The previous owner had the diagnostic done at one place and I just talked to the Subaru Master Tech that did it and then told a different place to do it because they could fix that part cheaper... So the place that installed the new part DIDN'T do a diagnostic.

This is why I keep telling y'all to not tell the shop(s) what to do - just tell them what symptoms/problems you are having. Now you've ended up penny-wise and pound-foolish. Geez, for all you know the first guy may have given you an incorrect diagnosis. The problem now is nobody is at fault but you and you're going to pay extra for that privilege.

I can understand trying to save a buck but you're going about it the wrong way. Use whatever info you have to help determine if they're playing fair when they call with the estimate. Just remember when you approve their estimate it's up to them to cure your ailment, not your diagnosis. Then if it doesn't work as planned it's up to them to rectify the problem at their cost. Find someone you trust to work on your car. A few extra bucks spent on trust is money well spent.

I'm not riding your fanny in particular, you're not the first one here to get caught in this situation. I'm just using you to make a point that may save someone else the same headache. Good Luck!

Yeah... I understand, but I now have another problem... I tried the diagnostic with the wires. So I found the two wires and plugged one into the 2nd from the left top row on the black connector. and I just got a solid Check Engine light. I don't know what i could possibly be doing wrong. I then started the car drove it around until it was warm and tried it agian.. when i put both of them in the top left 2 holes it blinks rapidly, but nothing with only one in the 2nd from the top left.. attached is a picture of the exact setup that i'm getting nothing with.
