A trans cooler is not needed with the 5MT. Cost varies hugely depending on what transmission you use, where you get the parts, and whether or not you do your own work. Figure anywhere between $1500 and $4000 ish?

TomsSVX is the guy to talk to. Where are you located? A WRX 3.90 tranny is probably the best option for you.

The car will run better if you keep it an auto. You can get a built auto for the same or less than it will cost to butcher the car up and add the manual.

Butcher?! How is a manual conversion a butchery of the SVX? I understand being a purist, but that's a little much. Plus butchering brings to mind images of cutting and carving up the car, which is not involved in the swap.

That's a pretty bold statement. I disagree, but it really depends on what kind of driving you are talking about. I hate the lack of control with downshift/upshift that one has with an auto through the corners. Up here in the NC mountains, half the battle with the road is maintaining the powerband through the twisties. With an auto, I feel that too often it will freak out and upshift (happened to me a lot with my old svx). I really feel that for the enthusiast, a manual is the way to go. Straight line speed - yeah, I could see an auto being preferable.
