....It's a MAJOR pita. Basicly, it's screwed in from behind. It's done BEFORE the dash is put in, so reaching the screws is nearly impossible. Although, if you have one of them funky L shaped screwdriver things, you might be able to get at it. Your best bet is to pull the gauge cluster and all the dash instruments (You'll probly have them out for color change anyways) and unbolt the center section from the rest of the dash. there's two big bolts behind the gauge cluster, one screw nder the ash tray, and two screws attached to small brackets behind the gauge cluster that hold it to the main dash. Dont forget the 6 screw that hold it to the metal bracket underneath the swooshy shaped plastic cover things under/between the dash and center console. Before removing, I advise you take some white-out and make hash marks, so you can re-align it properly
Sounds about as complicated as it is...but assuming your radio wiring is in good order, it really wont take more than a half an hour to get everything apart

I tried just attaching one screw from behind....cut up my hand and top of my wrist pretty bad (didn't want to remove everything)....but Eric's right...you should remove as much as you can so you can get in there and properly secure it.
If memory serves me correct, there are two different types of lighter assemblies...My original had two simple spade connectors on the back....the new one has a plastic (squarish-shaped) connector and a separate bulb on the end of a wire.... |

Try pulling the ashtray out and looking for screws holding the lighter in place
Edit: whoops, the posts before me didn't load the first time i looked at it. Disregard my uneducated guess about this

I agre with It's Just Eric. When I wanted to replace my lighter assembly, I had the chance to look at the dashboard of a gutted 1992 SVX that was a parts car. The dashboard was completely out and it was easy to see how everything went together.
There is no way to get the plastic panel that surrounds the lighter out of the dash without removing the entire center of the dash. There are 2 screws holding it in, but only one is accessible from the outside. The other has the head of the screw facing the front of the car, but it can't be seen or felt from the ashtray opening. Some members have just snapped it off (breaking the screw mounts) and used soper glue to refasten it. Maybe someone here has a photo of this part showing the mounting points that they could post. .
