Two interesting problems...
Two questions, the answers to which I hope are good and not bad.
1.) When I'm driving along, it seems like there's hot air coming out of the defroster vents. Because where the vents exhaust, the windshield and side windows fog up. Turning on the defroster for a few seconds cures the problem for about ten minutes. What's going on here? How do I prevent this without keeping the defroster on constantly? 2.) In 'D', everything works fine. I tried putting the shifter in '3' today just to see what would happen... and it revved up, then fell down, then revved up, then fell down, between 2000 and 3500 RPMs. It did this until I put the shifter back in 'D'. I haven't tried '2' or '1'. It also does this whether the manual switch is on or not. My dad thinks maybe the shifter isn't registering the correct position, meaning it's not actually all the way in '3'. Possible? Or is my tranny going? |

I usually have the Auto button pushed and adjust the temp up or down and the windows don't fog at all. If they do fog up, I push the defrost button and turn up the fan for a few minutes and after they clear, I put it back onto Auto. I am not sure what is happening to yours though.

its sounds like it could be a tranny problem... check the fluid level and condition first though

Fluid is brand new.
It doesn't do it in '2' or 'D', just '3'. Just another thing to check out once I get the car running again. |

is it consistant? can you do this every time you shift in to 3rd?

Can you perceive a similar reaction when the car is in 3 during normal automatic gear changing, through and into 3. This may be rather hard to detect. If all is well in this respect, your dad could well be on the right track, but this would be an unusual fault.

Okay, I'll explain in a little more detail.
The only way for me to perceive a third-gear slip in 'D' would be to put the car into full-throttle and watch it go through gears. But due to the car being on shaky ground, I never did this. I won't get a chance to until the radiator is repaired. So I can't tell you if it's "missing" third gear in 'D'. I assume not, however, since it drove normally and I didn't notice any strange operation in 'D'. But then we get to moving the gearshift selector into the '3' position. The moment you do this, the engine revs up like it's gonna switch gears, then falls back down to where it was, then revs up like it's gonna switch gears, then falls back down to where it was, etc etc. The transmission is not slipping as my foot is not even on the gas pedal. At this point the only input I have applied is placing the shifter into '3'. I should also note that when the engine revs up, the car seems to have an "engine braking" effect, and it does slow down. As soon as the revs fall back down this goes away, until the next time it revs up. It seems to be grabbing something, or the car wouldn't be shuddering like that. |

This latest posting contradicts what you originally posted, which didn't seem to make any sense to me at all. The only way that the revs can go up with no throttle input is that the gearbox has changed down. If the gearbox changes down again, then the revs go up again. I'm not convinced that anything is broken.

does your car have a hint of anifrez smell or a foggy film on windows because this could indicate a heater core poblem look at your pass floor and see if it is wet

If you think nothing is wrong, then why does this happen in an on/off pattern? Normally when one puts the shift down into a gear without pedal input, the revs raise, there's an engine braking effect, and it STAYS IN GEAR. My Legacy was like that. However, the SVX, when in '3', will raise revs, engine brake... then the revs fall down quickly to where they were before, then the revs go up again, engine brake... revs fall down quickly... rinse and repeat unless you put the shifter into some other position. In '2' the revs go up, engine brake, and it stays in gear. So is the gearbox downshifting and upshifting repeatedly when the shifter is in '3'? What would cause that? Is there some connection between the shifter and transmission that could be damaged or something? lovmysvx: The floor was never wet, but there is a film over the windows. However, I attribute this film to the fact that a chain smoker owned the car before I did, considering the condition of the interior. The interior smells like cigarette smoke. The climate control system appears to function normally. |

I'm surprised no one asked him if he disconnected his transmission resistor behind the battery (or if it's defective). Does your power light ever come on?
As for the windows fogging up do you use the "CIRC" mode ever?

The transmission problem is no more, I fixed that a long while ago. It was a bad resistor, so I fabbed up a new one and haven't had any transmission problems since.
And no, I don't use CIRC. Only Auto/Defrost/Econ. Econ when I don't want the AC kicking in and blowing freezing air in my face, haha. |
