Non-SVX, *(#&^%^ Eclipse axles...
I was working on a friend's Eclipse today. We have a bag of about thirty bushings to replace on the car, so we decided to start with the front suspension today. Oddly enough, a number of bolts came off pretty easily. I didn't really want to use a fork to separate the ball joints from the knuckle, because they're integral to the control arms and can't be replaced separately, so I figured I'd pull the axles so I could get a puller in.
The axles won't come out. No, really. The nuts came off without much fight at all, but the axles will not come out of the hubs. I tried heating them, I tried a puller and I tried whacking them with a hammer. That last one damaged the shaft - now I need a new axle. Great. Of course, it's still in the car. Any ideas?

No, seriously, if anybody has any tips on getting out a stubborn axle, I'd love to hear them. I have no idea what I'm going to do about this. Okay, I bought a new axle - but I still can't get the old one out of the car.

always look at both ends
check to see if back side of hubs have something like a pin or nut helping hold the axle in.

what year? I am assuming you are after the lower ball joint.
there should be a lock ring securing it to the arm on the 1g, which may make it look like it is all one piece, and a nut on the 2g After that I don't know, i've only had the first two. -edit- other than that... if you are in a real bind, cut the axle in half to pull it out so you can use your puller to push the ball joint through the nuckle from the top...

Yeah, that link is nice, but it confirms my suspicions - that there isn't any trick to it; the thing is just stuck. Beyond removing the axle nut, the directions on that site basically say to disassemble enough of the suspension so you can swing it away from the axle. Frustrating...but thanks. A friend has a big press. We're waiting on a tool to gently separate the tie rod from the knuckle, and once we have that detached I can take the entire mess (knuckle, suspension arms, axle, etc) over and try to press the axle out.

Thread?
Is this in the wrong thread or is now proper to ask technical questions about any or all vehicles in here? Just wondering if there has been a change?
