No - if you or anyone reports a thread we will look at it, if it is blatantly offensive or breaks the rules we will lock or delete it, if it is touching cloth we will discuss it among the mods and admins and make a group decision.

Doug
Roughly:
10% of Americans believe Elvis is still alive
13% believe the number 13 is bad luck
20% believe in astrological predictions
30% believe that friendly aliens have landed on Earth and have provided us with atleast some type of knowledge

So if 5% of members believe that a thread is bad, it should be closed?

Nope it's not a full democracy here. Admins/Mods are always watching all the threads. I may not agree with all of their decisions but I do agree with 99% of them and they are doing it in the best interest of the forums/network.

I too noticed that there has been a little more than normal tension as of late but it is understandable. Check with the mod/admin why your thread is locked/deleted and any(one) of them will be able to answer the question.

But do understand this: crying about why your thread got close is not going to bring it back. There is a great chance that they were closed because they did not fit the (new) rules or people are trying to test the limites of the mods. Either case, read the rules and follow them and your thread will not be locked. The admins/mods do not like to delete/lock posts either.

We, as in everyone here, including mods, admins, and members, are here to have fun and enjoy and share our passion for the SVXes with the people here. Do that.

phil
P.S. this is also coming from a memeber that has been around from the first day of this forums creation.

Do you really believe this Phil? Let the world run rampant and eventually things will sort themselves out? Mob justice? Every man for himself?

Chaos has been not been the issue, but the general tone and feeling of the board has been shifting away from what was a pleasant discussion group (with a single moderator) from years past to a board where multiple moderators are now needed and members are being banned for their actions. Rules were not needed in the past as members reminded others that this was a "family-friendly" board and please watch their language, links, etc. That atmosphere is gone. We, the mods, were in the past working behind the scenes and deleting threads, editing posts, asking members to discontinue certain actions. This resulted in people questioning our actions and making demands that they had no right to make. The rules posted at the top of each forum were put in place to clearly define what is acceptable here and what is not. Stay within them and we have order. Fall outside of them, and you now know what your own fate is. These rules will probably change over time as new situations arise, but we are now enforcing them.

I have no strong belief in being PC, however we would like to keep members from attacking members, avoid flame wars, not discuss illegal activities (of any kind), and keep the language and topics acceptable for all ages and backgrounds to discuss. Remember that the group is very diverse in age, socio-political background, religious beliefs, and economic status. Many people log in from their place of work and therefore NWS (not work safe) stuff will be deleted so as not to have one members post restrict or deny access to this board to another. There are plenty of anything-goes discussion boards out there on the web. If chaos is what you desire, have at 'em.

There have been many members driven away from the board by un-moderated actions like those described above. When was the last time you saw Trevor here for instance? While his tone was sometimes difficult to discern from his messages, his real-life experiences were extensive and wide-ranging and he was very approachable if treated with respect and common courtesy (like any of us would appreciate). Like your friend Rob, he despised BS and could logically debate others claims. He is now gone from this board; a loss to all of us in my opinion.

Our goal is to keep the peace, deal with the occasional out-of-bounds post/poster, and generally keep this place a decent place to ask questions, meet friends, and hang-out. I've personally had the pleasure of meeting many members at the meets I've attended (10th Anniversary, and two Reading meets). I've had members to my house and have been so lucky as to have been invited to drive a RHD SVX while in Ireland and then spend time with Joe and his family. I wish more people here would take the time to actually meet (face-to-face) the other members here.

I'm sorry for the long post. I realize meny here will not read this. Their decision. The moderators as a group truly enjoy spending time here. We have no desire for a "police state" regardless of how Chris and Alan feel. We are passionate about the car and the friends we've made here and we will take actions to keep those friends here and active within the group.

Regards and Happy Belated Birthday,
Todd

I'm thankful and appreciative of the moderators and your efforts. You make this an enjoyable site.

Having said that, I completely missed the reason why my original thread was closed. I did not receive a verbal warning, a PM, a warning, or a time out.

Perhaps it was someone else's infraction. Perhaps they got the warning.

You may have been reading something between the lines in the content of the thread, but I completely missed it. I was concerned and interested in an event which has recieved attention through this site. That is all.

What I was reading was a thread that respectfully disapproved of street racing or driving beyond one's capabilites, and included a lot of legitimate and heartfelt concerns. I saw no flames, or disrespect for the event or the coordinators. Porter got upset, but unfortunately the thread was closed before he had a chance to explain himself. I'd have like to hear his side.

I wholly encourage you to do as you need to. Close threads if you need to. But help the participants in the thread to understand what was done wrong so it can be avoided in the future.

I, for one, was completely clueless.

Thanks for your efforts.

-Paul

99% of stuff that gets canned or locked is because members report the post to a moderator. The membership here is telling us what they do or do not find offensive and we are reacting to that.
so what happened in the case of my "Engrish?" thread? was someone offended by it? was it reported? not likely.

it seems to me that it is a case of "Thou shall not question the rules!"
shouldn't i have received a warning (don't question the rules!) or something as to why it was deleted?

i am not argueing with you, immortal - i've always felt you do a particularly good job of moderating in moderation. its just that you are the only one attempting to answer my questions, despite not knowing what even went on.

Yes, it has been a problem in the past. Some of the gansta talk was hardly understandable and it is the same rule that many other forums use. The rules were not just made up quickly to be funny, but were researched to benifit this site and its members. I feel sad that we have come so far with the site and yet have gone backwards with some of the attitudes of the members here that locking threads has become common. It seems to be a goal by some to have their post or thread locked or deleated. I am a member who has enjoyed this site like everyone else. The only difference is that I have been given a responsibility to moderate the site. I would like to relax and enjoy it like everyone else.

Your thread was closed because of something other than your post. You did nothing wrong. The post was becoming very heated and was not changing. You were not sent a warning because there was nothing to be warned about.

i was not making fun of the rules, i was asking why a particular rule was needed, because i didn't feel that non-English posting was a particular problem. i didn't see the rule pertaining to "gansta talk" or "l33t", it seemed that it was addressing foreign languages the way it was phrased, which led to my confusion. my intention was to make the post with a bit of humor, but i guess you didn't take it that way.

Nice dig. Yes, Trevor was intelligent and outspoken. He was also present on this board because he wanted people to worship him for his knowledge, and he escalated discussions with his pomposity and "sly" approach to insulting people. He felt that if he couched his vitriol in enough twists of language and doublespeak, most people would fail to comprehend the full extent of what he was saying. I have no such lack of comprehension, and I take offense when repeatedly personally insulted ad nauseum.

Apparently many members here feel that it is ok to aggressively denigrate and slander people as long as it is said in a nice way... then the same people get up in arms when someone else makes a direct statement of the same severity and offensiveness. It's ridiculous.

I tell you what... you folks take a vote, and if in your wisdom you want me to leave the site and not participate futher, I'll respect your wishes. I've been involved heavily in the Subaru online community since 1998, and I think my contributions to that community and the thousands of Subaru owners that I've known, assisted, and organized fun events for will speak for themselves.

If given an opportunity, I will be glad to give a full account of the weekend and the events that occurred from my own perspective, and then people can feel free to comment on it in any way they see fit.

that is the problem - the rules are only being enforced selectively. my posts or threads can get yanked without warning or explanantion (and for the most part, any valid reason), but others are allowed to stay that clearly violate the rules.

i have no problem with rules, but if they are to be implemented to the letter of the law, then make that apply to everyone.

Porter, i don't want to see you or anyone go.

Maybe I'm just stupid here, and don't even write or speak correctly....but... wouldn't it be good if a moderator that closes a thread due to some violation ALWAYS posts the cause of that action?

Then there is no doubt about what happened!

I don't know if this is already done, but reading previuos posts in this thread, gives me a hint that it is not done.
