Spacer question

I've been debating whether or not I should get spacers to make my STi wheels stick out slightly more and give it a better look. I'm not doing anything extreme because I know it will hurt the already weak bearings, but would I be able to get away with a 5mm spacer on each wheel using the stock lugs? I don't want to deal with getting longer ones. What about 10mm? I think 5-8 would give a good look, making the bbs wheels have a +48 or +45 offset respectively. Thoughts?

The offset is not the problem.

Adding a 10mm spacer to the thickness of the stock wheel, without using longer studs, may be asking for trouble.

After the wheels ans spacers are on the wheel, you should have a stud length equal to the diameter of the stud. So if you have a 12mm stud, you would need a stud length of 12mm engaging the lug nut.

For a 12mm x 1.25 stud, the MINIMUM number of turns for hardware engagement is 8

If for some reason you do not have this minimum then it is recommended that you use an ET Type nut (Extended Thread) (see below). ET Type nuts are useful when using spacers, as they go into the hole in the wheel and engage more of the stud. They still have the 60º taper to clamp the wheel.


A 5mm spacer moves the wheel out 0.196" (and grabs that much less of the stud)
A 10mm spacer moves the wheel out 0.393" (and grabs that much less of the stud. That's a lot, almost 1/2")

Great info John! Do you think I could get away with the 5mm spacer without the special bolts? I'm only worried that they won't fit my wheel lug holes. Does anyone have measurements of the lug holes on the STi wheels?

Not sure.

Try the 5mm spacer on one wheel and see how many complete turns you get on the nut, starting at just engaging the thread to snug against the wheel. Check a wheel without a spacer the same way.

You will always get a couple more turns once they are torqued.

At less than 1/4" difference, you may not even notice the difference in the way it looks.

Apart from what John is saying. The more you offset the wheel, the more torque steer and brake dive the steering will have.
Accelerating or braking on rough or slippery road, can have the steering wheel pull from side to side.
