Cement mixer drivetrain
I recently installed an unknown condition 5mt from a '96 Legacy into my '92 SVX and upon first drive I have an obnoxious grind from under the car under acceleration. Nothing is hitting or dragging. Should I assume that the trans was junk prior to install?

Re: Cement mixer drivetrain
First check the simple things. Are any of the dust shields scraping the brake rotors? Is the driveshaft scraping the exhaust?
Can you give any better description of the sound???

Re: Cement mixer drivetrain
The noise feel and sounds like the driveshaft is being pushed into the floor. not the case. I had the car on a lift and found a bad engine mount. Also it seems that the tranny mount has a lot of movement. Still doesn't fully account for the noise unless the rear shaft is binding somehow. will car drive if I full rear section of driveshaft?

Re: Cement mixer drivetrain
I assume you changed the rear diff to match the new tranny?
And no, a Subaru Manual transmission can't be driven without the rear driveshaft in (Unless it has a locking center diff)

The Forester ones are probably usable, but the XT/XT6 ones won't fit on the EG33 motor....

Re: Cement mixer drivetrain
Huck369, You are correct!! The xt mounts I ordered from ebay do not fit.......directly. However as my search turned up nada for mounts I opted for the gamble.
1st let me say what a prick those are to remove with the mystery 3rd bolt over the crossmember. I found that a long 1/4 drive extension will push up to the bolt head once it's cracked free. Then I cut the the rear bolt hole out to the side so the bolt could be started and the mount slid "into" place. Beats starting bolt with mount in the way. Anyway, I cut the extension stop off of the xt mount and slotted the mounting holes on the svx bracket. The engine slid into place (oh, take about 6mm out of the bottom mounting stud threads) and the noise went away. $60 in parts, 2 hrs of my time and lots of swearing. Now I have to replace the rear drive shaft seal that leaks onto the exhaust. Perfect for starting a ride to work headache. |

Re: Cement mixer drivetrain
Glad you got it to work, so it wasn't a total waste....
