reprogramming your Alarm FOB's with only one?

I read once in a FAQ that you could program the key Fob for the svx alarm system with only one fob, even though the instructions say you need both. For some reason, when I bought mine, it only came with one fob. Anyone know if this is possible? How to do it? Also, any way you know to check that the key fob even works?

Thanks.

Trent,
Yes it can be done. After you enter programming mode, you just push the button on the one remote five times, instead of two for the first and three for the second.

To enter programming mode, start by turning the security switch off (there will be no light on the security switch when off). Then, turn the ignition switch (engine off) to the "on" position. Then, turn the ignition switch off -- immediately begin to push the security switch on and off rapidly until you hear your horn beep and your parking lights start flashing. You will hear a clicking from the dash (or the rear deck if you have a car later than 93). Press the button on the fob five times. The horn should beep each time you push the fob (that's how you know it's working). After pushing the fob five times, turn the ignition switch on, then off again to exit programming mode.

I always thought that when programming two remotes you pressed the button two times on each transmitter. When programming only one remote, you pressed the remote button four times.

Does the three/five combination work the same way?

Thanks for the information: I'll need to reprogram the FOB, based on the electrical problems I've had recently. (See "Electrical Problems...." thread)

In the owner's manual, it suggests the 2/3 or 5. When I programmed my single, though the manual was wrong about some of the procedure, I still used the five click method. Then, when I got my new one, I programmed with the 2/3. All is well.

Where in the owners manual is the section on the remote FOB alarm? I can't get the FOB to be recognized.

Once I'm in program mode (which I can get to), when I press the FOB 5 times, (or 2 or 3...) is the car supposed to go "beep" or "beep-beep-beep-beep?" I'm getting the four quick beeps, and don't think that's supposed to happen.

Now I'm a 'puter geek, so it shouldn't be too hard for me to figure this one out....

Thanks again for your help,
-Z.

Z, you're already programmed. See the other thread.

Ok, I haven't gotten to try this till now because my car has been in the shop for 2 months for a tranny rebuild (and so far I don't think it is rebuilt correctly). Anyway, I don't think I am doing this right, or maybe I was not clear on how to do it. I turn the ignition to "on", I push the security switch with the red light so that the red light is not lit. I turn the ignition to "off", and I immediately start hitting the security switch on the dash board rapidly expecting this to enter into security mode, unfortunatly, it never does. Am I doing something wrong? or maybe is there another way this might be done, like different suppliers of alarm systems? Let me know!

If I remember correctly, the ignition switch is suppose to be ON when you rapidly push the Security button on and off. After about 6 pushes, I believe you here a beeping, then a clicking from the security unit. That indicates you are in the programming mode. Push the button on your remote 4 times (lights will flash and the horn will beep each time) and turn off the ignition switch. You should be set.

First, make sure you do, indeed, have factory Subaru security system (indicated by the appearance of the "security switch" on the dash), and that the fob is, indeed an oem system fob.

I've edited my directions at the top of this thread, but, to reiterate: Security switch "OFF", Ignition switch to "ON" position (don't start the engine), Ignition switch to "OFF", rapidly press security button on and off till the parking lights flash and you hear a clicking, press button on fob 4 or 5 times (a beep of the horn will sound each time to "confirm" acceptance of "code"). Then, turn ignition switch ON (don't start the engine), then, OFF to leave programming mode. If this procedure does not work, your module either needs cleaning, or is possibly toasted. Another thing to try is, perhaps pull the fuse overnight (especially if the security system does not light up at all), then, replace it the next morning and see if the security light comes on.

I have another problem. I have a light on the security switch, so I know that the system works (I think) I go through the programing mode - switch on - engine off, and then back off again. I push the buttons on the FOB, but nothing happens. I have just replaced the batteries. I checked to make sure they were in right, but I can not get the car to recognize that I am pressing the FOB - either one (I have 2). I bought them from somebody, and I am not sure that they work. Is there someway to check them? Any help would be appreicated.

I don't know of any way except to find someone with an SVX who will put their car in "programming" mode and allow you to click your clickers to their car.

Does the light stay on constantly? If so, that's not a good sign. Are you actually entering "programming mode?" (clicking from the module and parking lights flashing?). Are you making sure you begin the process with the security switch OFF (no light, no blinking)?

The security light blinks when I arm the system. I have the system off when I turn the key on (engine off) and back off again. I do not hear any clicking or do not get the lights to flash. It is like the system does not know that I am pushing the buttons on the FOB. It doesn't seem to respond at all. I am not sure that the system goes into program mode or if both of the FOBs are bad. Thanks

Earl,
It sounds like you're not even going into the programming mode. If you were, you would be hearing a clicking and your lights would be flashing (that's how you know you're in the programming mode). I mean, it's as if you've turned on emergency flashers.

In other words, after turning the ignition on, then off -- you have to push the security switch on and off rapidly UNTIL the horn beeps once, the clicking begins (and sustains, throughout the process) and the parking lights blink (and sustain blinking throughout the process).

If the parking lights aren't blinking and the module clicking (and keep doing so) you're NOT in programming mode. The clicking and flashing will not stop until you LEAVE programming mode.

If the light is blinking on the security switch, that pretty much indicates that the system should be operable.

Thumbs up

I DID IT!!! It worked this time. Or it worked when I did what I was supposed to do. Operator error. Thanks. All you had to do is type slower in the instructions. ha Now - Do I need to push the security switch before I leave the car, and hit the FOB - then the car is armed? Or does the FOB lock the doors and turn on the alarm without first pushing the security button? Thanks for all of your help.
