Question Stock CD Player spits out CDs

Hi again. I just bought a '94 LSi today, and noticed that the CD player does not work correctly. When i put in a CD, the stereo switches to CD mode and the CD spins. But when it gets going the player flashes "DISC" and spits it out. It is a store bought CD and not a copied one. Any thoughts on whats wrong and how to fix it?
I'm most likely getting a new head unit for christmas anyway, any suggestions on what to get there? (about $200-250 range)
Thanks in advance.

don't bother to try and find an installation kit either,,,the new one will just screw in place of the old head unite, I left the original cd player in place because it took up the space...if you do that, leave the small 2 wire pug on the original cd player...it makes it light up when your lights are on,,kind of makes it look like its supposed to be there!! wont work, but will look cool
